Default New X300 owner

Hi.

Just bought myself my first ever Jaguar today....well, tomorrow, once I've done the bank transfer!

It's a 1996 XJ6 in a lovely metallic red, with cream interior. Bought it from an (apparently) well known, and well thought of Independent Jaguar Dealer in Leeds called Tasker & Lacy.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get down to Leeds to look the car over as my wife is a transplant recipient (1998... she's fine!), so couldn't take the chance, but MOT history is excellent, and after speaking with one of the brothers who runs the business, Richard, I feel I've bought a lovely car, and can't wait to get my hands on it.

I've just arrived on the forum 5 minutes ago, but I'm assuming you've got an X300 forum somewhere on here, so I'll post some pics of it once it's in my grubby little hands. Delivery will hopefully be next week sometime...so long as we're not all locked in our houses!

Cheers,
Alan

Welcome to the Forums.

X300, ROCK solid, well down here they are.

Both mine, a 3.2 "base" and an R, never caused any real grief.

Good luck

I've not had the best of luck with my cars recently, so I'm really hoping this 3.2 'base' is going to be smoother sailing. Seems to have been well looked after by an enthusiast, so fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Welcome to the forums Alan,

Good to have you with us. The X300 is a very robust model and a good choice for your first Jaguar. I had a 1996 3.2 which was still going strong at 162K miles when I sold it.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-xj6-xjr6-x300-26/ to the X300 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/ to find other members in your region.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Enjoy the forums.

Hi Graham.

Thank you. It's the 3.2 that I've got too. Only 67,000 on it though, so hopefully a long way to go yet. It's the thought of future rust that's worrying me already

It's in my nature to worry though...so I'm not going to worry about it!

Cheers,
Alan

Thanks for the heads up on my bio. At the time of signing up, I thought that 'X300' was only the 3.2, but I know differently now. Learning already! Bio adjusted.

The 1970's XJ6 and the later XJ40 were dreadful for rusting but body preparation was hugely improved with (Ford influence) and the X300. Is this yours?

If so, it looks excellent.

Thanks Elinor 👍
Excellent...my favourite has always been Red, second favourite is Black.
I've also got a gorgeous '92 Mercedes 500SL (R129) in red (Signal Red), which we use top-down in the Summer months. I once had a black push bike though!....with 'Bomber' handle bars ......oh, and a red Raleigh Grifter.
Them were the days.

Thanks Graham.

Yes, that's the one. Lovely looking car. Hopefully it turns out to be as good as it looks. Taking a bit of a gamble buying it without seeing it in the flesh. I'm going purely on the reputation of Tasker & Lacy. I'm yet to see a bad review about them, and I've spoken several times with Richard, and feel very reassured that all will be well. It also comes with the 24 month 'Gold Warranty', which can be used anywhere in the UK. Needs an annual service at a garage to be valid, but that's no biggie. Normally do this sort of thing myself, but might even have a drive down to Leeds next October, book into a B&B with the wife, and make a weekend of it as they service the car. They seem to know their way around the Jags.

Only thing I want to definitely do to the car once it arrives, is to find out the best way of removing that 'Leaper' mascot from the bonnet. Absolutely hate it! Will probably mount it onto a piece of Oak, and have it as an ornament instead. Thinking of either covering up the holes with a 'Growler' badge (size?), or rubber grommets, wooden dowels, chewing gum...anything but the mascot. IMO they look gorgeous on the older Jags, say up to maybe early '70s or so, but the X300...no.

Anyway, really looking forward to it getting delivered sometime next week hopefully. Waiting on a phone call to discuss delivery dates. Needs to be soon though...I'm starting to feel like a 53 year old 5 year old on Christmas Eve!

I bought a used XJ40 several years ago after a test drive and went back to collect it a week later. The salesman was delighted to tell me they'd fitted a Jaguar "leaper" for me as a gift and was quite distraught when I told him to remove the abomination or I wasn't taking the car. A bodyshop can fix a thin plate on the inside to cover the holes, fill them and patch paint to blend it invisibly.

You should be OK with Tasker & Lacy. They won't want to risk their reputation by failing to honour any warranty.

Jeez... that's a shocker. To do something like that on the assumption that having a lump of cast metal sitting at the end of the bonnet is something to be seen of as a treat! Bet his face was a picture when you told him 🤣

I'll look into it. Might need to go the route of a badge or whatever for a few months, unless the body shop quotes less than I'd expect, which doesn't happen often in our house. Priority is to get it off, taxed, insured and anything else that needs doing...doing. See how much is left in the piggy bank once that's all taken care of.

Ok, I sort of guessed that might have been the issue. Thanks for that Graham 👍
