Default newbie in new york

Hi - I am new to the forum and do not yet own a Jag. I have wanted an XJ8 for many years and now the stars have aligned for me. I have narrowed it down to an XJR 2000 to 2003 and am searching to find one.

I would appreciated any tips on items to look out for in these cars. I have started searching thru the forum and have a good understanding of the cam teshioner issues. I have not noticed any other major issues that I should for be aware of for these model years.

I plan to do most repairs myself, as I do with my current cars, so I am most concerned with expensive replacement parts vs. labor costs.

thank you in advance for any tips

Ed

Welcome , congrats on your choice
I think you should go for '03 model year . Parts are not cheap but not only for a car in that class

Hi Ed, welcome to the forum. I can't offer you any advice other than buy the best one you can afford, with full history etc.

I agree, history is paramount. Beware of the "bargain". Also, let other users chime in... I speak from experience. Almost went to look at a bargain XJR. A user clued me in on a history report. So, make the quest fun and be sure to let us all know what you get. Welcome and have fun!

Welcome to the forums. Agreed with everything said above. When you get a Jag (of any type) you don't want it to be a jump in both feet first thing. Since Jags are finicky, you'll really need to do your homework. Check out the XJ8 and XJR section for more info!

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will keep reading thru the forum to learn more. I have looked at possible other choices for the same years and the same performance such as BMW, Mercedes or the Cadillac CTS-V. None of them have the class and elegance of the Jag

I signed up for a month of unlimited car fax - a great resource, like this forum

thanks again

My jag service guy says the 2002-2003s are some of the most solid XJs out there, he rarely sees them in the shop. These don't have air springs, compressors or the finicky throttle bodies. Good luck, there's plenty out there, as I've been looking as well. $15-$18k and you'll have a great car!
