Hi everyone, I'm Steve and this weekend I adopted a 2003 Silver XKR, with 90,000 miles on the clock.

There's a classic car garage a couple of streets away from my house and when I walk past I often stop and look at what they have for sale - a lot of Porsche 966es, a Morris Minor, a Lotus Esprit Turbo that I liked the idea of but was very battered, a Ford Mustang that they seem to be having difficulty selling and a couple of weeks ago a very clean looking XKR. I thought about it for a few days, negotiated with my better half and am now a very proud owner. Her company car is a new BMW X3, so we have a sensible car and the XKR is for fun.

She is kidding me that buying a Jag is admitting I'm middle aged. I had a look at one of the personalised plates web sites, searching for something with my initials. What I found was perfect: UR53 SJG. The new plates go on as soon as the registration documents come through.

I look forward to getting to know everyone better and please forgive my dumb questions. I'm really not a mechanic, but willing to learn.

Mid-life crisis? Never!

 

Welcome. You really do need to be a bit of a mechanic to drive any 12+ year old high end luxury car as there's lots of things to wear out or deteriorate from age and the costs of professional repair are steep. But the information available nowadays via forums like this one, Youtube videos, etc. make owning such cars much less exclusive than in the past. You'll be amazed how much you can do yourself.

And don't think of it as a mid-life crisis. Its only a crisis situation if you find yourself having to purchase a mini-van at your age.

When I say I'm not a mechanic, perhaps I should qualify it. I learned to drive in 1977 and my first car was a mini 850 van. For the next 20 years I had various cars and motorbikes and did most of my own repairs and servicing, getting quite good at cam chain replacements on the motorbikes. Then I got to a stage where I had relatively new cars, often on leases, so the servicing was all done by main dealers.

With the amount of help available here I'm relatively confident to do a lot of my own maintenance and for the harder jobs there is a classic car specialist half a mile away, which is where I bought the car.
