Just bought a 2002 Jag type it has a problem with the brakes when you push down on them they are weak and they do not stop the car quickly would this be the abs pump?

ABS failure would trigger a fault code but more likely simply air in the system. Air is compressible and gives you a soft pedal and weak brake action. Seems most people know they need to change engine oil, but few people realize that all the other fluids in a car need changed periodically too, particularly the brake fluid every three years. I've lost count how many master cylinders I've thrown in the garbage because of corrosion they could not be rebuilt. Start with having the brake fluid flushed, replaced with fresh fluid and bleed all the air out of the system. If the car has been in Arizona all its life, then internal corrosion may not be the cause of air getting in. Could be that the previous owner did work that required disconnecting a brake line and just failed to adequately bleed the system. Still, if there's no record of it having been done recently, make sure you flush and replace the old fluid as its past due.
