Default secondary tensioners

I just purchased a 2000 XJR with 91,000 miles on it. The previous owner bought it at 60,000 5 years ago and said he never changed the tensioners. He has no idea if the first owner had them changed. Before I start driving this vehicle I am going to change the tensioners or ensure it has been done. I've called 3 jaguar dealers in the areas this car has been and none have a record on the car so I am down to verifying for myself. Is there a simple way to verify whether the tensioners have been changed without tearing everything apart or am I going to have to open the engine up so much that I may as well change them out no matter what? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Welcome to the forum skk914,

Unlikely they've been done from the known history.

Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 section for information and advice. In particular the HOW TO section at the top of the threads there has much useful information including this thread on Timing Chains Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User ID button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Please also visit the UK Region section UK - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to find other members in this country.

Enjoy the forum.

Welcome to the forum skk914,

You should be able to verify the condition of the secondary tensioners by taking the cam covers off. I believe they are on the 4th generation improvement on the tensioners. If you find you have a first or even second version of the tensioners - I would change them out.

Enjoy the forum - Anthony
