Default From SL500 to XKR?

Hi Everyone,
I remember as a small boy, 8 or 9 years old I was fascinated by Jaguars. I tried to persuade my father that buying a second hand MK2 was a much better idea than a new Ford Zephyr 4 but failed dismally. I wrote to Jaguar and told them of my passion and was overjoyed to receive a silver pin badge of the magnificent Jaguar emblem that I treasured for years. 56 years later, I'm now just a few months from retirement age and currently have an R129 SL500 as a weekend car and whilst it's a great car with terrific build quality (the reason I bought it), it just lacks that certain something. So I've decided to carry on working for at least another 12 months, save as much as I can and then change the SL for an XKR convertible, the newest that I can afford. I hope I might be able to get a 5.0 but if not I'll settle for a 4.2.

What do others think? Worth it or not?

Hello, Marco.
What a wonderful story about your Jaguar pin! Do you still have it or did it leap off somewhere?
Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Thanks for the welcome!

Sadly, no I don't have it now. I guess the pin broke and then in one those ruthless clear-outs that have to be done when the accumulation of memorabilia gets out of hand, consigned to the waste bin. But now I'm really excited at the prospect of returning to the Jaguar fold - the little boy never leaves us, the toys just get bigger and more expensive.

I've not been in a position before to have the opportunity of treating myself to such self-indulgence but now I can. or will be able to in the near future. Should I go for an XKR or get a newer XK for the same price? It'll be the one and only chance I will have to get the car of my dreams.
Marco

Nice story. You must absolutely get a Jaguar. I kind of feel the same… Dreaming of some cars for so long, and finally, being able to get them (well, only some, not all). Isn’t great fulfilling dreams after hard work?

Whichever model you select, I suspect it will be a very lucky car.

Welcome Marco . . . and greetings from a fellow enthusiast in Australia

Others have already given you some valuable pointers but suffice to emphasize that we have an active XK8/XKR section worthy of some extensive reading, resources etc. You sound well suited to the task . . . and the pleasure!

Best wishes,

Ken

Welcome to the forum. It only took me 41 years to get my jag after falling for the series 1 in 1973(I was 5)

Welcome to the forum Marco,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I'll probably replace my current XK 4.2 with a 5.0 litre so you know what my advice would be!

Follow Norri's link in post #5 to the XK/XKR forum for help, advice and information.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. It's good to be in a friendly place! I've been lurking for a few weeks before introducing myself - finding my way around. I think it'll be a while yet before I get my own XK but this will give me plenty of time to find out what to look for from all you knowledgeable guys. I must say it's a relief to see that the XK does not have the issues that the more recent SL's, R230 and R231 models have suffered from and that forum members are not constantly complaining about problems as they seem to on the MB forums.
I'm looking forward to being able to contribute to the forum.

Thanks again.

Regards to all

Marco
