Do you honestly think not only that the person who owned that car 40 years old would remember that vin number, but also what are the odds he would be on this forum.
That would be lik eme posting who owned a 2001 miata Vin number 1048578603...thanks for your responses

You know, I think I might've owned it....

Seriously though gotta agree with 93 here, it's a pretty long shot.Unlikely any one here would recognise the car or be able to assist on this one. I assume you are in Germany? If you know when it was imported from the USA, then there must be records of who imported it. You'll have to wrok backwards from there. It's a good possabilitythe past owners are deceased in which case very unlikely any information would be available. Regisrty records should reveal who licenced the car over the years, and you might evnt try carfax and run the VIN although likely a dead end as well as it's been overseas for a while. All in all it's a heck of a long shot... but good luck.

We're good....But not that good.

Point well made Aquill........wer'e here to help n encourage new members, not ridicule or flame them!
Ok.......so its a long shot for sure, but who knows, maybe rip had posted this same topic on every known Jag forum? Maybe he wants to know that much!
Anyways RIP........Over here in the UK we have a log book which comes with the car and does offer some history....Any joy there?
Failing that you could try your version of DVLA .....your national governing body for transport?
Good luck with your quest.

Jim

Carfax history reports only go back as far as 1981. I would try and go through the manufacturer themselves and see if they have record of where the car was purchased and then go to that dealer and see if the have the original documentation. It's a long shot, but worth the try! I'm pretty sure that this is another one and done poster!

Hey, Ease up on 93...he has a valid point. the question was kinda dumb...
It sounds as if the guy did get some info, and as he already knows it was originallydelivered to Jaguar in new york, he could follow the lead and check with Jaguar as to which dealer it was delivered to, then follow that trail to it's importation to his country. Seems simple, but given the amount of time passed, it will be harder than one thinks. Every country has registration requirements and the original documentation for exporting from the states will show the shipper. All a matter of following a murky thread back to its source. As to being a one hit wonder, he hasn't even replied to thank us for the small help we were able to provide.

BTW did anyone here ever own a dark green XJ40 with tan leather? I presently own it and was wondering where it came from.... ROFL

We can be such a welcoming and friendly forum and then really shitty to some newbies. I know I know and one n doners, but I think we need to give them a little more time before we "rip" into them...don't you?
As Aquill says........If you were a newbie, posted once then came back a few days later to see all sorts of comments, would you stick around?
Some of us are thick skinned and some of us aren't
Also please bear in mind that not everyone is as committed as you by visiting and posting everyday!

You guys say it like I was that offensive. The first thing i posted in the new people section was something Like I just bought a xj40, when I go to inspect it what should I look for. And Bigdream you went somethin like why would I buy a car without seeing it. It was rude, but big deal i don't care...And you have to admit that this post was one of th emost riduculous things ever stated. A 40 year old car come on.

A) Not that he ever came back to see...
B) I'm with 93 stupid questions are well....stupid.
C) We should be friendly and open minded, but boy oh boy this one was a doozie
D) And I only took offense when someone chose to rip into 93. If we're gonna play nice and all that we should treat everyone in here with respect.

I will be the first to admit that i don't know squat about older jags, especially the 40-yr old beauty that RIP picked up. In his defense, and my own knowledge (or lack of) perhaps he thought that that model/color combination, etc was rare in production. And if anyone had an idea or source that he could research further on if it had more history to it...like had someone famous owned it, or better yet...royalty. I dunno, just reflecting.

but in any case, I thought this smiley was appropriate -> [sm=admin.gif]

93, I hope we have since become pals, because I never intended to offend you, just offend the newbies! It was like a rule for me. You're no longer a newbie, so no longer should you feel offended. I'm all for being nice now, so we'll see how it works out! Also, to be honest, I didn't feel that Quil was trying to offend you, it's just that sometimes we never help out, and simply drive people away. I hope no bad blood among us, and things end well!

I sudenly have a lot more respect for rip. He's trying to do anything in his power to trace the owner of the vehicle(which is probably dead by now)! RIP...

Its a small world about that. I had a black Maserati BiTurbo some years before that I had put the words Maserati in gold letters below the door. One day I was wondering what ever became of it and what those things go for now, looked on eBay, and there it was up for sale a couple hundred miles away in Houston. The guy said he'd let me have it for $900. (I passed it up.)

You never know. Doesn't hurt to ask. A photo of the car and something unique about it would help.
