Default XJ8 On the Way!

Hello everyone, I'm from southwestern Georgia, near Albany, and I'm actually in the process of purchasing an XJ8. In fact, the wife and I are deciding between two different cars--a cherry '98, or a nice gray '01. Both are in good shape with low miles. For the moment, the '98 looks more likely. I've always loved the looks of Jaguars, and have only recently decided to purchase one. Anyway, that's enough of an introduction for now. Thanks for reading--and for all the information in this forum. It's a great resource.

Hello Rand Man:

Best of luck in your decision. I'm out of my "genre" in suggesting things regarding the XJ8s, but... I do know that you need to be careful about the pre-2000s engines regarding cylinder linings. Ask around on the appropriate section and you'll get some advise. In either case, both cars will be an absolutely dream to drive. Have fun!

Pre-2000 cylinder linings were a problem? I didn't know that. I'd heard about an issue with plastic cam chain tensioners. I better do some more research.

It looks like the nikasil linings are only a problem if the engine isn't taken care of. Otherwise the stuff is great. The more serious problem, it appears, is the cam chain tensioners. They appear to need replacing in pretty much ever AJV8 up until 2002.

Welcome to the forum,

Good luck making up your mind.

You are right about the linings if they haven't caused a problem already it is unlikely that they will.

So we're going with the '98 XJ8. It's a fine car, less than 63,000 miles on the clock, carnival red, virtually like new, except for the headliner.

My Cat has a droopy headliner covering the manual moon roof door. Can this be fixed without breaking the bank?
