Default Xjs tire advice needed

Hi. We own a 1989 XJS convertible in mint condition that we won in a raffle 3 years ago, with 11,000 miles on it. It gets driven less than 1000 miles/year, summertime only. It came equipped with 1994 Pirelli 235/60-15 P600 tires, which we need to replace as they are old, cracked, and unsafe. From looking on the internet, it seems that the P600 is no longer available. We live in a rural area of Idaho and do not have access to large tire dealers. Can anyone give some advice as to what an acceptable replacement tire for our Jag would be that would be as close as possible to O.E., but not cost a fortune? Thanks.

If you want a true performance tire, such as the car was originally shod with, your choices in that size are very limited and very expensive.

Going to a 225/60x15 tire will open up more choices.

If you just want a standard tire...not high performance or having a high speed-rating...you should have no trouble finding a 235/60x15 from Goodrich, Dunlop, etc that would be satisfactory.

You'll want a "97" or "98" load rating though.

Visit The Tire Rack. They're on the web

Cheers

Hi,

Welcome - nice prize! You'll get good advice here. I'm not an expert on tires, but much of it is going to be personal taste and brand loyalty.

Best,

For the kind of mileage you're doing, I wouldn't think you really need big-name rubber. A 1000 miles a year and probably not too much speed should see you OK with the mid-range stuff.

Thanks to all of you for your replies and advice. I am now perhaps more confused!! It was actually the Tire Rack who suggested I check in with the Forum; they also suggested the Firestone Indy 500 235/60 15, but I don't know if it has the load & speed rating. Jag recommends a T rating. . .I do want a tire that will not compromise handling around sharp mountain curves and turns.

Every tire is a compromise in one way or another :-)

But, if you want really crisp steering and cornering you'll probably want a tire with a "V" or higher speed rating...as they generally have stiffer sidewalls.

Be ready to open your wallet if you want the original 235/60x15 size in a V-rating,as I think only Pirelli offers one...not the P600 but some other model.

I'd drop down to 225/60 for more choices....and a better fit on the 6.5" wide wheel that your '89 likely has.

Cheers

Default Tire conundrum continues

Yes, I'm still at it, trying to find the best tire replacement. On ebay I found new Pirelli P4000 225/65 ZR 15 for a decent price. DD, you suggested a 225/60 15, so what do you think of going into a 225/65 15? Only about 5 mm difference. . .
