Default Aluminum and Hail

They don't play well together. My 3 month old '16 XF got caught up in a significant hail storm in VA last month. About 300 dents, golf ball sized. Yea, Allstate doing a very good job working with me on this, but what I learned is that aluminum is mostly not repairable (vs steel which has "memory" and can be returned to its original condition sometimes). Hood, top, sunroof, truck, all doors, rear quarter panels all being replaced. Some parts backordered from UK. The interesting part of this $35K process is that there are few body shops in FL (where I live) who can deal with aluminum. JagUSA has a good website to find them. I do worry about structural integrity, squeeks and other noises when they get done.

Ugh - that sounds no bueno!! I'll keep that in mind if I'm ever out in hail and look for cover quickly!

I wonder if a thick car cover might help if it was thick enough? My co-worker had a Firebird that he babied and had a super thick car cover for it. In light hail there was no damage. It was a very rare occurrence that we even get hail here.

Good luck with the repairs.

Hail storms with hailstones the size of golf ***** occur in the Mosel valley in Germany. Rooftiles and vines (for winemaking) get smashed to bits. We saw an Audi on a flatbed with front and rear screens smashed. I was looking for a bridge to shelter under, but the storm passed.

I have seen baseball size hail in Texas and also on rare occasion golf ball size hail in Florida. Destroys everything in its path. Whew...imagine your homes roof being destroyed with hail. Scary.
