Default Jaguar Mechanics in Auckland NZ

Hi to any passing Aucklanders.

Who do you use to service your Jag(s)?

I know of Archibald and Shorter and Ken Stout on the Shore. Are there any other independent mechanics - especially in the central Auckland area?

Regards

Default Looking for a Jaguar Mechanic (independent)in the Auckland area

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. I'm trying to find an independent Jaguar mechanic who can service my car and undertake maintainance work as required in the Auckland area (preferably the Northshore). I recently bought a 1997 Jaguar XK8. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hi PaulP!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your purchase!!!

Ken Stout Motors is over there.
I have not used his services, but he's been in business a long time.

While you are here, be sure to say hi at the XK8/XKR section
There are some great guys there with lots of info. If you know which end of a spanner to hold, their info could save you many thousands of dollars.
Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Thanks very much for your reply and the links, lots of excellent information.
With respect to a Jaguar mechanic, I'm looking for an enthusiast or similar who enjoys working on Jags. Thus, I want someone who will be able to do servicing and maintainance work, without putting it bluntly thinking that I'm loaded and ripping me off.
Cheers Paul

I'm the same Paul. Being informed appears to be the key to affordable ownership. I don't own an XK8/XKR yet but that's what I am researching here. The XK8/XKR forum section has loads of good info on common issues and remedies. Tricks such as buying identical Ford LS Lincoln parts for tensioner upgrades can save considerable money. Many things are easy do-it-yourself jobs with YouTube videos and guides to help.

I've lurked here quite a bit and learned enough to be able to work with my local mechanic on some issues if need be.

I am watching the market for these closely. Did you buy the grey (Titanium?) '97 from Tradin Post? If so, nice car! I almost made a move on that one.

Regards
Stuart

Beacham Jaguar is down in Tauranga - they're very good, if pricey.

Up in Auckland, Darryll and Andros service my cars - they're excellent at what they do, but they do take a while. Price is very reasonable. If you get them to work on your car, make sure you have another car that you can use in the mean-time. They're based in Onehunga on Princes St - Jag specialists. Andros is also a Jag parts breaker.

Jcgtveloce

i have not long bought a 2002 x-type v6 jag from beachams in penrose and i have to say it has been a nightmare i was so looking forward to owning a jag but now i am starting to wonder if it was the biggest mistake of my life. The continues lack of response from beachams in penrose and or hastings company, it certainly gives a jag a bad name if you have such a bad after sales experience.

I am still waiting for a simple job to be done after 4 and a half months, my next step is the consumers department, i was told by the owner last week he would arrange the job to be done this coming week tuesday/wednesday. If i get no appointment next week after telling me the same story weeks on end then i intend to take it to the consumers department.

So on that note be warned!!!!

Just picked up this thread as I live in Auckland and bought A 97 XK8 3 wks ago so looking for a mech as tensioners have not been done. Quote from Ken Stout was over $4k but it looked a very thorough job, new everything, so I need to consider as I didnt budget on that much.

I will try the jcgtveloce one...cheers.

Did you get a jag yet cadmium? You certainly did a bit more research than I did and yes this forum is awesome.

Look likes a few of us Aucklanders and Kiwis on this forum.

Default Welcome Stan!

Congratulations on your new XK8!!! Photos Please!

I had a similar discussion about tensioners with Ken about 2 years ago. If I remember correctly, Ken's preference is to do the lot: Secondary AND primary tensioners, as well as replacing the timing chains and guides. This is good and proper, but expensive.

Alternatively, you can do what many of the guys do here and just replace the secondary tensioners. This removes the bulk of the risk at relatively low cost. If you feel handy, you can even do that yourself with some imported Ford tensioners and some cable ties - probably for a few hundred bucks and the odd bead of sweat. See: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ics-faq-52653/

No I havent bought an XK yet. I have one in my sights: See this ambivalent Test Drive report here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ide-xkr-72006/

I guess I have more time that money at the moment, but the nice folks here tollerate this Ford-Fairmont-Driving impostor while I gather information, courage and the necessary loose change to make my purchase.

Regards
Cadmium

Hi Bobby46,

With Beachams, make sure you are in constant contact and hold your service manager accountable - if you don't have a service manager, something's wrong. Never forget - Jag mechanics (and owners!) are shady. I don't know why - we just are. Even if you think you're not, you are. Go about your business dealing with Jags (especially the mechanics) with a tight fist!

Don't wait too long Cadmium. I'll post a pic of my girl soon.

I found your test drive thread very interesting and I too find driving in the sports mode very differnt but to be honest I'm afraid to put my foot to floor now until I get my tensioners done after reading all the stories. My decision now is do I do the lot or just just the secondary, I might poll that one.

Hi Jcgtveloce

Hahahahahahahah service manager you must be joking, I think he is the car detailer and office boy because all he could say when asked a question was “I don’t know”. I know one thing I will never go back to the Penrose branch after Thursday.

I arrived there at 9.33am, the so called technician, he tried to insert the new key into the ignition, I asked him what was wrong, he said it is the wrong key so I called the Hasting manager he said it had to be cut it was a blank. So I tootled off to the key cutting people and had it cut awesome service by them. I had to pay $28.30; I arrived back to the workshop at around 10.15am.

Hello why didn't the technician know it was a blank in the first place if he was a Jaguar technician? Then the drama started it took him from 10.15am to 12.15pm to try and work out why the second transponder wasn’t working, he kept telling me “I don’t know what is wrong”, the next thing he had the transponder in bits, I went up to him and asked him why is he taking it to bits? No answer!

As he was assembling it all back together there was no care taken in not touching the battery with his bare fingers so I told him your not suppose to place your fingers on the battery. No answer!

He continually was starting the car up on and off for around 10 times I thought he was going to damage the ring gear, I was getting more and more angry then suddenly I decided to go up to him and told him politely to leave it alone and I will go to a professional Jaguar Technician, that was 12.25pm so that was that.

I took the Jaguar to the professionals and they very kindly fitted me in to find out way the other technician was having a problem which took him two hours and still didn’t solve the problem. I couldn’t believe the service I got from the professional Jaguar service agent, they were so friendly, showed me where the coffee lounge was with a TV to watch.

It took around 15-20 minutes to find out the problem, apparently it was a UK market frequency which is 433 MHz key, and it should have been a Singapore market at 315 MHz. Surely if he was a Jaguar Technician he would of picked up on the incorrect MHz of the transponder, makes one wonder doesn't?

After nearly five months in the waiting the Hastings branch manager ordered the wrong transponder for my Jaguar, so I have one that works and one that only opens the door and starts the car so there you have it people. I really feel sorry for any other clientele that leaves their expensive Jaguar in the hands of a Technician that obviously needs to be trained into the Jaguar technology.

Thanks all.

Hi Cadmium

I have just recently gone to Archibald and Shorter and found them very professional and also treat their customer well, they sorted my problem out very quickly.

That's great news bobby46! Welcome to Jaguar Forums anyway. I am sure you will find a lot of support here.

This thread has been a good way for a few Kiwis to meet and I wonder if we should start a thread just called 'Kiwi Chat' or something so we can talk about whatever takes our fancy...

Hi Cadmihum

That sounds like a real good idea starting a thread called *Kiwi Chat*, and yes one could talk about whatever lol.

Default Mechanics In Auckland

I have use Ken Stout for the last 4 years on our S-Type and they have serviced it well and when we had a fault with the main electrical control module they found it and solved it. I would recommend them above the Archibald and Shorter boys (Roverland on the North Shore) who managed to wreck the engine of one of my cars.
