Default Suddenly lost most of electrical power and engine.

Hi all,

Car is a 2000-s type with 47K miles. While waiting at the stop light, most of the car suddenly quit working. Engine quit running, no power to instrument display, no horn, no headlight, marker light, interior lights, e-flasher, power windows, sunroof, power side mirrors, door chime, etc. Strangely, the items that still had power and working were: radio/cd, power driver and passenger seats, rear view mirror dimmer, and the lighted air-bag symbol.

I did the following to no avail: clean (wire brushed) the battery terminals and cables, the connection from negative cable to chassis. Tried another battery. Checked a bunch of fuses:horn, sunroof, switched system power 1-4, primary junction box, horn, lights, all were o.k.

On checking fuse No 4 in passenger compartment fuse box, the fuse was blown. This 5 amps fuse protects the following: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relay coil, instrument cluster, fuel pump relay, Rear Electronic Module (REM), and transit relay.

Any thought on why this fuse continue to blow immediately after I replaced it twice?

A great many thanks.

Maybe a chafed cable somewhere.

At an approx voltage of 15 and a 5A fuse you'd have no less than 3 ohms so a meter should let you check if there's an approx dead short. (I'd disconnect the battery and touch terminals before checking, though unsure if that's necessary.)

Lots of things can't energise if critical things can't first get power.
