Default 01 - trans toast!

My tranny is cooked. 180 kms on the clock. Option so far;

Used tranny. Lifetime warranty. Installed $1900 CAD. Same tranny.

Any sage advice? Recommendations?

Thanks

It'll cost you in labor if the used trans. fails. Otherwise, $1900 for a used trans. w/installl sounds ok.

Yes - ouch is right.

Yes: labour being charged (including fluid) is $450

Was thinking of picking up a parts car (for the tranny), as a 2001 s-type with 180k is selloung for approx $4k, though, cash is a bit tight at the moment.

Forget about the $4k parts car unless you can part it out and sell to this forum and/or e-bay. Just have the trans. rebuilt or you purchase a low mileage warrantied salvaged trans. for $800, have a shop install it for $350+ fluids.

I plan to keep the vehicle for a long time; last car I kept was 20 years old.

Your thought is that the warranty is not worth it? Yes : I can get a used tranny, 6 month warranty for $900

Exactly. The other guy is charging you $1900 for trans. and install. How much is he paying for the trans.? Likely $900 too. So why is he charging $1000 for labor and fluids? You can buy the same trans. for $900 w/6 mo. warranty and have a mechanic pop it in for $300 labor, $40 fluids. = $1300.

You need to stand back a minute and do some research. You have a VERY common Ford transmission. You can get a completely rebuilt unit with warranty for about $1400. Don't screw around some used POS.

In fact that Ford 5R55S and variations are used in the Mustang and Explorer. There is a HUGE aftermarket for this transmission. Take a look at this rebuilt unit:
TRANS SPECIALTIES : LINCOLN LS REBUILT TRANSMISSION 2000-UP 5R55N Remanufactured and rebuilt automatic transmissions, transmission parts and torque converters

These transmissions can now be built to withstand 1000HP and more.
5R55S Mustang Transmission Performance Parts 5R55S 5R55W 5R55N Transmission Parts

Many more options for you guys with the early 1999-2002 S Types than the rest of using the 6 speed ZF unit.
