Start with a trans drain/fill. Get your kit here:

But then find a mechanic who can do the job for you. You really won't want to try to do it yourself...

I have no idea if my trans has ever been open. I bought my S with 120k mi on it and can say this ZF 6HP26 six speed is a marvel of modern man kind. I'd sure like to keep it that way. Just amazing shifting through all gears and it doesn't have any of that squishy feel. The gears lock up tight like you're using a clutch. I wish there was a way to drain a half oz of oil out the bottom and ck with magnifier for traces of worn parts..Maybe even give it a sniff like the old days.

Well it has it's problems. Look up "The Lurch".

It's in almost all 6 speed ZF's.

Thanks.. I read up on it here.. this site has a run down and TSBs if I ever have this problem but knock on wood.. I hope we aren't getting too far off subject. Good stuff to be aware of.. Now return to the scheduled program "90 mi service"

If you don't know if the trans has been serviced I would do it right away.
It too important to not do.

As we know the sealed for life thing was for Jaguar and not the car owners.

Sorry for the confusion but yes it will fit all 2003 and up S Types because we all share the 6 speed ZF.

The filter is integrated in the plastic pan so you will get a new pan with the kit. Did not know if you knew that and this is the first transmission I have worked on that had it made this way.

"Sealed for life . . . "
[tbird6] makes a great point about the importance of the drain/kit/refill maintenance for the ZF 6HP26, but I want to underline his subtle point about that "sealed for life" mantra being FOR Jaguar.

It was never an edict invented BY Jaguar, but by the unit's German manufacturer, ZF. Rather foolishly in hindsight, Jaguar did the same as at least another dozen car assemblers (Audi, BMW, MB, Ford etc etc etc).

From luxury saloons to high performance sports, and not just the Europeans, they all rushed to fit the same box . . . why? because it was so damn good . . . and all were to be embarrassed by this claim and later, all amended their service schedules.

Not being a nit-picker, but this is one that Jaguar did not engineer.
Cheers,

Ken

You might want to start a separate thread instead of hijacking this one.

Sorry about that Mikey.. I thought 90k was high mileage and that i"high mileage oil" applied here as a choice for his car and maybe mine.. Since I asked that and found many high mileage oils have an additive that swells leaking seals. Having a dry engine I know I will avoid it. Thanks always for your advice here..
