I just replaced the Expansion Tank, the 'split at the seam' Thermostat Housing Assembly and Thermostat and for preventive maintenance, all the hoses. I figured it best to replace the serpentine belt and water-pump at the same time. Minimal investment and labor, surprisingly. Seems tight as a drum again and seeing and smelling no coolant.
What I can't seem to figure out is how to properly resupply the coolant!
I refilled the reservoir; took it out on the freeway for about 20 miles of 75 mph or greater run with heat turned to max to make certain the core was filled (got plenty of heat); the Low Coolant indicator came on a couple of times (as expected) so I was able to pull over and add coolant; then by the time I got it home and in the garage, the Low Coolant indicator was lit again.
Let it cool down and then removed the cap. Seemed to be down about two or three cups (maybe).
My guess is that because of the crack in the Thermostat Housing Assembly that there was lots of air introduced over time.
Is there some secret to getting the coolant system filled completely or is it is just a matter of time before the air get forced out?

Don't know about the 4.2 but with my 3.0 I pretty much do the same as you and usually need to top up a little over the next couple of days also.

Agreed. Just keep checking your coolant level and adding as needed. Not unusual at all for several days being required to finally burp all of the air out of the system....

To bleed it completely. Put a floor jack on the frame behind the passenger side tire, and raise that side of the car a bit. - No need to get a tire off the ground.
Second. Heat on max temp, and blower on fastest speed. You should have good heat at idle. Rev to 2500 for 30 sec intervals and keep it there.
That should get any remaining air out of the system.
Take care,
George
