Default 04 S-type 3.0l Won't start. Dash reads restricted performance and trouble with locks.

Hi Folks! So yeah New Years Eve and my beloved car would not start. I guess the trunk won't even open. The car locked itself with the keys in ignition. (not running) and when my husband tried to start it it would crank over but not start. Odometer reads 'RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE'. The car was ran very near to if not completely empty the previous night. Husband put gas in it but gauge still reads empty and there is no pressure in the fuel line. Any thoughts or suggestions? P.s husband checked fuses linked to doors and trunk and fuse is good.

Wow, that must have been some New Year’s Eve party!

Is your husband still locked in the car?

All seriousness aside, can you get the trunk open yet? If the electric function is inoperative, use the key. See if water is collected under the spare tire. If so, this will affect the electronics back there, which controls the fuel pump, IIRC.

The next thing is to connect a battery charger for a few hours, preferably overnight. Not sure a low battery is the root cause, but these cars are very finicky about low voltage. Make sure the battery is topped off before starting any troubleshooting.

BTW, great username!

+1 on fully charging the battery. Age and condition are a factor.

Do you hear the fuel pump run as the ignition switch is turned to the ON position?

Thanks you guys. As it turns out due to a leaking Power Steering pump hose, we had some of that mineral oil leak down onto some electrical connectors. Husband cleaned it out and its back to normal.
