Default 2000 4.0 Gear Box Fault Pls help

Now here's the problem... The jag I got for my wife is a 2000 s type 4.0 and now the problem is that it feels really heavy/slugish only on the take off. Once rolling it feels fine. This just started happening maybe a day or so after we had the Valve cover gaskets/Spark plugs replaced. I was also going to replace all the coils too but this problem came up. Anybody have any ideas on what it could be? I'll try to see if I can pull some codes to post up. All ideas and opinions appreciated.

*By the way guys valve cover gaskets off a Lincoln LS work perfect for us.

Oh also guys the fans stay on when the key is removed... It never did that before. Started after the GearBox Fault light started coming on. I actually have to disconnect the battary for them to turn off.

The "gearbox fault" indication says it. I remember reading on here about slow takeoff, otherwise ok. Check out with a search here, but I think this is a serious one. Also try Google as these autoboxes are also used on BMW.
Leedsman.
p.s. If my memory serves me right, I think it's the stator clutch (the one-way one) between impellor and turbine. It free-wheels all the time, turning the torque converter into a plain fluid flywheel; I hope I'm wrong because it's gearbox out and overhaul.

No, don't get confused.... The 2000 S Type uses a Ford transmission not a ZF.. So, to the OP, don't pay attention to ZF related faults since they don't apply to your car.

Many different issues can trigger a "gearbox fault" message. The engine computer and trans computer talk therefore an engine issue in some cases can trigger a gearbox fault as well.

Please get any codes read and post here.

Work done and then two new faults - almost for sure something about the work that was done is the cause. May be as simple as disturbed/damaged wiring, but could be any of a lot of things.

Did the service tech disconnect the battery before servicing the engine? Pull the codes. The final analysis may quite possibly require a clearing of codes uncovering an already nice running car.

All torque converters of the conventional kind have a stator between impellor and turbine; this stator is controlled by the one-way clutch. This is a generic feature not peculiar to any make, and is what makes the torque converter multiply the torque from the engine. Apologies for lack of clarity re. BMW, not my forte; they can use the GM autobox. The rest still applies if you think about it. I still hope it's something else though as it's big money involved.
Leedsman.
p.s. Electric-shift gearboxes such as in the Citroens don't have a torque converter, neither do CVTs to the best of my knowlege, although some manufacturer could well have tried it.

On the 4.0 there is NO separate TCM (tranny computer). Engine and gearbox are both done by the PCM.

Be aware that coils are also a wear item. I see you replaced valve cover gaskets and spark plugs. Are you getting any mis-fire codes?? Usually like p0301,p0302.--p0308??

Yes I am getting a misfire and I already ordered my new coils.... But also good news guys my mechanic figured out that a fuse was out and was causing the whole problem. Wooooo wow I was already looking into a expensive rebuild. When we first put the car to his Snap On machine it through like 14 codes from there is said he knew what it was going to be. Thanks guys I appreciate all you guys help.

Excellent news Frank! Next time insist on the mechanic diconnecting the battery before servicing the engine as a means to not blow that fuse.

Aren't fuses great! And, I guess thankfully, Jaguars seem to have a fuse for every little thing. Which helps narrow things down even before pulling codes.
