Default 2001 Jaguar Stype V6 AC has stopped working

Jaguar 2001 Stype with 45K original miles runs fine. The AC was working and cooling fine, AC stopped cooling. Took it to my mechanic who looked at it and stated refrigerant level is fine, compressor was not running but he tested compressor and said that is fine and felt there is a sensor that needs to be changed. He doesn't have the proper computer to test to see which one it is. Any ideas? I'm looking for a local Jaguar (non-dealer) shop to take it to in nyc. I happen to love the car as it looks classic but man is it hot right now in NY

Thanks
Paul

Did the shop you took it to check the fuses and connections?

How was the refrigerant level confirmed?

Can he read the future, too?

More details about refrigerant levels in a minute.

No computer needed. Please try an AC specialist, versus opening your wallet based on some guy's gut feeling of a sensor that might need to be changed. In the meantime, you can work through this guide with nothing more than a cheap thermometer. Push this button, watch for a response, etc. No special tools needed, and you will likely be able to diagnose the fault yourself:

On your control panel, drive the selected temperature down until LO is displayed. This puts the system in manual mode and bypasses most (but not all) of the automatic inputs. This is a great help for troubleshooting.

If you now have cooling, you have a problem with the automatic control system. See post #3 in the guide.

Is still no cooling (compressor still not running), see post #5.

Post #4 has details and pretty pictures explaining why you can't accurately determine the refrigerant level by pressure readings. Is that what your mechanic did?

Honestly I dropped the car off and that was the report when I came back. He attempted to add more refrigerant and stated it was full. Not certain if he checked the fuses but I will follow the nice posts and share results.

Thanks
Paul

Refrigerant level is determined by weight, not volume. The system may perform poorly if overcharged or undercharged.

Sounds like someone who doesn't even know the basics of how to do it right.

I agree with the last two statements. Unless he evacuated the system and measured what came out, he is guessing how much is in there. Since the compressor isnt running, he cant say if its ok because the test REQUIRES IT TO BE RUNNING!

find a better shop. For them to just try and add freon and say its full because none went in is stupid and it is not the the way you would go about checking it
