Jaguar 4.0L V8 engines have head gasket failures, it's not a chronic problem but it happens. Thermostat and water pump failures are often the original cause of increased engine temperature which can lead to that result.

Based on your description, that is a severe internal leak and an easy one for an experienced technician to verify. Pressure testing the cooling system and cranking the engine over with the spark plugs removed will identify a cylinder that is taking in a significant amount of coolant past a failed head gasket. Performing a cylinder leakdown test, i.e. pressurizing each cylinder and looking for bubbles in the coolant reservoir, will identify smaller gasket leaks. There is also a tester to identify the presence of combustion gasses in the cooling system, but I personally don't consider these to be reliable.

and you should be getting rough idle or running and even a misfire or 2 on adjacent cylinders. No block ck Andy, why? I havent had any issues, other than maybe just cause Im confiming a suspect gasket...We probobly dont get as many as you do though. And I agree with you previously too. most are from overheat, same with dropped exhaust seats in the rear cylinders on V8's.

Hey Brute,

Maybe I gave up on that routine too quick, but the only time I could get repeatable results was on an engine that had more obvious symptoms...I think that's the same thing you said, only different?
