2002 Gearbox fault
Hey Folks,
I am back with another issue on my 2002 Jaguar S-Type. Its been 8 months now since i bought it, second hand though, and the first day i got it as i was driving back to my home town, just a few KMs away, a message flashed on the dash as follows '' Gearbox fault''
I called the dude who sold me the ride, and he said there was nothing wrong as the error came becase he used wrong ATF. He advised me to have the error cleared on diagnosis which i did, and this keeps happening when am trying to accelerate at high speed. Is there anything you can help with, or does anyone have similar experience, and please share how you got this fixed. I am afraid to drive it out of town, since i am not too sure what am doing to my gearbox.
Waiting to hear from you.
Scott

Well we got the year at least?
We really need all your car info to help.
You have the much cheaper to repair Ford 5 speed. You need to get the codes read and then search for what they mean.
The guy that sold you the car was lying as all car sellers do. Why did he put the wrong oil in it and why did he not change it out for the correct fluid.
And what is the correct fluid? I will say that's probably not your problem but we won't know until the codes are read, cleared and then read again. Remember we want the codes to repeat before trying to fix anything. The car is trying to tell you what's wrong.

My 2000 4.0 does this as well, expect the message says "Transmission Fault", not Gearbox Fault. Likely something to do with your torque convertor as that's the code that came back with mine (same transmission). Best to at least have the fluid drained and refilled to see if there's any metal shavings in the pan (mine had a lot), then just hope it continues to at least give you some form of service (mine has a sloppy 1st-2nd shift until warmed up unless I'm easy on the gas pedal for the first few miles). It will likely need a rebuild in the future ultimately, as our transmissions don't seem very resilient. The seller definitely saw you coming though.
