Default 2002 Jaguar S-Type 3.0

My sister has a 2002 Jaguar S-Type 3.0, and when she puts it in reverse or drive, the car moves freely as if she is pressing the accelerator pedal.

This is her first car as a gift from her father.

To me it sounds as if the linkage or one of the gears in the transmission is messed up.

Has anyone had this problem before?

Automatics mostly have a TC (torque conv) and they pull a little. Is it more than that?

Agreed.

Both ours, and in fact, ALL my Jaguar automatics move when in D or R, and the speed of that movement is dependant on the model involved.

The S Types move quite quickly out of the garage (flat floor, no slope), and slight pressure on the brakes is needed to resrict that speed to my own comfort zone. Never looked at the speedo reading, but it is fast enough to activate the auto door locking system, in either R or D.

The X300. not so quick.

The XJ-S, slow, as in slower than me.

No, it doesn't activate the auto door locking feature. I guess it is normal. We didn't know.

I tend to agree with normal.

They are "fly by wire" throttles on these cars, as in NO accelerator cable, and the idle speed is electronically set/controlled. First start (cold or hot) is usually at about 1400rpm, and then it settles to about 800rpm. I wait for the settle before moving off, as I am never in a hurry these days.

With a fully warmed engine, foot oof the brake and on level ground, the car will 'creep' at a slow to moderate walking pace.

I've never driven a car with automatic transmission that doesn't do that.
