My engine light and display performance restriction came on, the mechanic said, cylinder 5 is backfiring, how can this problem be fixed without investing a lot of money? Unfortunately, I'm between jobs and unable to get it repaired properly.

back firing or miss firing ?
back firing on one cylinder is unusual .
miss firing is more common .
DIY is the only way to fix on the cheep .
you could start by removing the coil and checking for oil in the plug well .
and remove the spark plug and inspecting it also . and swap coils around to see if the issue shifts with the coil .

if it ends up being a coil I have 7 extras and would gladly give you one...I changed mine out because I had 1 bad one and replaced them all and saved the good ones....just need the part number to match...I live in ca also so mailing would be cheap...

Is your S-type a v8 or a V6 ? The coils are not the same for both engines.
