2003 S-Type 5 speed
I'm looking for the A/C drain. I've read in the archives it is above the transmission and inaccessible. I have a manual transmission and have quite a lot of room between transmission and the tunnel; but I still cannot find it. The tunnel above the transmission is covered with a heat shield is the drain behind that? A picture of location with transmission removed would be helpful.
Is the drain plugged? Getting a musty smell in the cabin?
Can't help with the exact location. Does any water collect on the ground when parked? If the drain isn't completely blocked, you could run the AC for a while and then quickly raise the car on a lift or tall jackstands. Then you could find where the condensation originates.

I've bought the car recently and have not run the A/C, other than to test it works. I've also not checked the sunroof drains either. It does have a musty smell. No signs of water getting in the car. The car had been parked outside and not driven for several years. No sign of water anywhere I've checked, trunk, under rear seat. I've not checked under front carpets yet. From what I've read in the archives a plugged A/C vent is a good candidate.
Check and change the cabin filter. I prefer the activated carbon ones that are more expensive. I also spray Lysol or other disinfectant into the filter area before installing the filter. Do this with the fans running full blast and wait a bit until things dry out before installing the new cabin filter. I have had to spray certain cars multiple times before the musty smell goes away.

I already changed the cabin air filter. and pulled the box its installed in. I also pulled the tray under that to check the ECU connector. Removed the glove box to see ECU. No sign of water inside in that area. It won't hurt to spray Lysol; I'll give that a try before I pull the gearbox.
Sounds like a lot of work chasing something that may not even be a problem. Could be the AC drain is just fine. Have you checked for water collecting on the ground after a drive?
On most vehicles, it's normal for a little ice to accumulate on the evaporator. Within 30 minutes or so after parking, expect to see a small puddle under the firewall area. If this is happening, your AC drain is not plugged, no matter exactly where it's located.

I've bought the car recently and have not run the A/C, other than to test it works. The musty smell is very strong. I'm doing some front suspension work and have the car in the air. I've read in the archives that the A/C drain is impossible to access. My car has a manual transmission and has a lot of room around it. So maybe the drain is accessible ,if I knew where it was. If I see water under the car from the A/C drain I wont be pulling the transmission.
I had a similar problem on a Toyota Celica once. I tried using bombs. It didn't work. I had to remove the a/c matrix and clean it with a paint brush and bleach, then regas the system.
The smell comes from mould. Unless you kill the bacteria it will keep coming back.

Mold reproduces/spreads via spores. You are correct that in extreme cases making the smell go away requires mechanical as well as chemical intervention. My S-type had a minor case of this issue and a "bomb" was adequate to banish the smell. The next step, if the "bomb" does not work, is removing the cabin filter and spraying Lysol, or its equivalent, directly into the duct work while running the A/C and with the fan at full speed.
