2004 s-type 4.2 ticking
Hello fellow jag lovers. Well here's my first post and Jag #3 for me. Had a 91 vdp and 94 xj12. the 12 was an amazing ride, with horrid MPG... rocket on the freeway and would idle straight up hill like it was flat. 120mph was it's favorite crusing speed... Burried the needle at 160 and kept going and that Chevy kick down muscle car feel was great! Jet engine sound with all the clicks and buzzes... loved it to death!!!
ANYWAY, now I have an 04 s-type 4.2. NOTHING like the earlier jags, still a cool ride though and love the fuel economy.
Problem I'm having is some engine ticking on acceleration. I've seen comments of tensioner and bottom end seals but have not had this referred to as the 4.2 but usually the 4.0 or v6... any comments on what it would be on a 4.2? Shims I've read as well, just looking for a starting point. I'll try the stethoscope to narrow down and check for noise when not under load soon as I guess this could help narrow top.or bottom end issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Last I need is timing chain to break and make it a junker... oh yes, car is 2004 with 60k miles. Looks virtually new. Already had the shift linkage come loose, dccv go bad, repaired the ac control module burnt traces, electric ebrake stick at rear pad change, etc... gotta love these tempermental cats.. they just want attention.

Is the noise a 'ticking' or is it a knocking sound when at idle, or only under load? Do you have the service records for the vehicle and has it been regularly maintained? Are there any DTCs stored, and if so, what are they?
Generally, the 4.2 Litre unit does not exhibit the timing chain tensioner wear and breakage as did the early 4.0 Litre engines. I have not come across a 3.0 Litre with any timing chain issues thus far.
