Long time lurker and I can usually find answers to my questions by looking over previous posts, but not this current predicament.
I have an 05 3.0 with 150k on the clock continuing transmission problems. I have the opportunity to use a garage and lift and as time is limited, am thinking a straight transmission swap is safer than me trying to quickly try and rebuild the current one.
I have found a good condition transmission with only 70k on it, but it's from an 07. Does anyone know if there will be any obvious issues fitting a newer model year to the 05? The listings seem to show 06-08 despite the transmission itself obviously being the same, hence the question.
You need to match the number on the side of the transmission EXACTLY for it to work. You might consider getting your original rebuilt. That way you know it's the correct version. You have the updated 6 speed ZF and they are pretty common now and used in many cars so the shops are more familiar with them.

The 07 I am looking at is 1068 401 370 AISi9Cu3(fe)
My 05 1068 401 (110 I think) AISi9Cu3(fe)
The main problem is a leak, which then causes shifting problems until topped up. I don't believe this has caused actual damage to the transmission as it drives smooth once new lifeguard is added. I may be better off just dropping the current transmission and at least replacing the seals accessible without an entire rebuild. If I could have put in a newer model, valve body and all, and not had any marriage issues (mainly software I imagine), then having a newer transmission with 70k on vs my 150k miles, would be great..
I was under the impression that when I first drive, and the revs go odd around 2000RPM /40mph it was a damaged transmission/torque converter, but now I've seen a couple of posts saying this rev stuttering between 1800-2000rpm is normal , so in that case, fixing the source of the leak is probably the safest solution
Clearing the adaptions is the tricky part in my area, looks like it's going to be a case of getting a clone mongoose. First up I'll do another oil/filter change this time with ZF parts.
I had changed the filter and filled her with Lifeguard 6 a few months ago, perhaps the replacement pan was garbage, everything seems tight to torque yet I am loosing a fair bit of ATF, it's evident around the pan bolts at the rear, yet nowhere else that I can see, cooler pipes look good as does the seal coming out of the transmission to the driveshaft. When I got the car it was leaking ATF although not as bad..
As I was away from home when I realised the ATF was low enough to cause poor shifting I had to top up with some Mercon SP to get me home, hence the colour.
