Default 2005 STR Code P0455

I got a MIL on the dash. Got the code read and came up with P0455 and P1111. I know the P1111 is OK. After searching I have found a good number of XK and XJ owners reporting P0455 but not the S Type??

We had a discussion on fuel tank flange seals setting codes a while ago but those codes were different (P0442, P0456). Plus they were coded as small EVAP leaks. Reading the XK and XJ problems it looks like the CCV (Canister Close Valve) and/or the Purge valve can cause this. The P0455 description is "EVAP Large Leak". Could be a gas cap but just last Saturday I got the car inspected and the gas cap was actually tested at this time. So I don't think it's something that easy?

Any factory tech help?? Calling BRUTAL!!!

You mean last Sat it was tested and passed? Hooray, brilliant timing!

The good news about P0455 is that it's not a small leak so will be easier to find. (I didn't say easy.)

I'd read & note down the freeze frame data, then clear the code and see how long it takes to reappear. And note the data again, looking for clues. If it happens often, maybe a smoke test will find the leak but with luck a tech will have useful comments

IDS can command the various valves to open or shut. I don't think AE does that.

Thank JagV8!
I thought about a smoke test but have read several comments by Brutal about its lack of usefulness? Plus for a shade tree guy I don't have the stuff to do it.

The car runs fine and I have not found any place with a fuel smell. I will check for fuel smells closer especially in the rear seat area and under the car near the fuel tank and hoses.

I saw the idea of using smoke matches (they're cheap - plumbers use them) but that was for engine manifold leaks. For fuel leaks? Matches? hmmmmmm

I think Brutal was saying smoke was no good for the tiny leaks. Makes sense as you'd not see smoke heading to or from a joint as there would be so little flow.

How often is the code coming up? How about the freeze frame data?

Code is constant. No way to get freeze frame data yet. I might be able to borrow a AE unit. But my friend does not have the Jaguar pack for the AE so don't know how useful it would be without it.

Without the jag stuff, just use any OBD tool.

So if you clear it, it comes back instantly (er, engine needs to be running I expect)?

If it happens instantly, I expect the freeze frame data won't be useful. I was thinking the code appeared just occasionally so you'd be looking for the conditions to cause it.

Well it looks like the gas cap was the problem! Apparently when the emissions testing was done the gas cap was removed and the test device was put on my cap. After the test they put the gas cap back on the car. Must not have been on good enough.

I did not get the code reset the first time I had it scanned. Dumb I know! The second time I had the car scanned I had them clear the codes. About 40+ miles of driving later and no light.

I like the easy fixes!!
