Default 2006 s type stuck in Park (Fixed)

Hello, My 2006 s type is stuck in Park but the indicator light is on for Reverse. The car is in reverse because I cannot start it and the backup indicator bell rings when i walk behind the car. I took the j gate apart and didnt see any broken parts, no burnt computer board, etc. I hoookd up a volt meter and put 12v to the solenoid and it activated. Any suggestions what it might be?

It sounds to me like the linkage is out of adjustment. You can rock the car to get the mechanism out of park. I have found that my car gets stuck in park on hills if I don't apply the emergency brake. The weight of the car causes the transmission lock to stick. If you rock the car the weight will be released and the shift knob will come out of park. I can see if this happens to often the linkage could become misadjusted and cause the problem you are having now.

Cincy - you sound to have the 1999-2002 car, which is known for that problem. (See threads on here, if you want to know more.)

It does NOT apply to the newer models (2003+).

chadw - the other thing to check is the 2 bolts on the side of the trans where the shifter cable enters. Fairly often these work loose and can even drop out

(This problem does NOT appear to affect the early cars. Win some, lose some!)

I went underneath my car and followed the shifter cable to where the two bolts are. One fell off in my hand (thankfully) and the other was loose. I tightened them both, reassembled the j gate and voila! Saved me a trip to the shop! THANK YOU!!!
Great Forum...someone actually knows what they are talking about!

Hi chadw

exactly the same happened to me the loose bolt was on the ground under the car,
Took me two hours of stripping down the shifter instead of jacking up first

Excellent! Thanks for the follow-up.

Check them when you do an oil change

My 2006 s type jaguar periodically gets stuck in park! 4 service stations and even the jag dealership could not figure it out. It's always happened on flat level ground. I can let it sit a day, then it's fine again! Afraid to even drive it, because I never know where I'm going to have to tow it home from! PLEASE HELP ME! Thanks!
