RE: 3.0 tune up...
You are right that the intake manifold needs to come off to get to the rear bank of plugs. There isn't anything in the way of special tools, and the only thing that comes to mind is gasketing for the manifold. I can't remember if that was permatex or a kit from Jag. It's been a while. Other than that it is just time consuming. Be careful of the MAF when you do it. Sorry that I can't be of more help.

IF IT IS MISFIREING YOU PROBABLY NEED AN IGNITION COIL OR 2 THE V6 IS PRETTY COMMON FOR THIS WATER RUNS OF THE WIPER COWELING AND INTO THE PLUG VALLEY. ALSO THE VALVE COVERS LEAK AROUND THE PLUGS CONTAMINATING THE COILS.IS YOUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON? IF SO ITS A GOOD IDEA TO GET IT SCANNED AND SEE WHAT CYLINDERS ARE MISSING.GOOD LUCK!

RE: 3.0 tune up...
Just to reiterate what Canuk said, it is more likely that bad ignition coils are the problem than O2 sensors. Use an OBD II reader and see if you can identify the cylinders that are missing. We were forced to do two at 68,000 miles. If you have to replace a coil under the manifold definitely replace all the plugs while you're at it. You don't want to have to dig under there more than once. If memory serves the proscribed replacement period is 100,000 miles. The plugs could easily be worn out at 85,000 since most manufacturers spec that number at optimal driving conditions. Best of luck.

My 2000 S-Type 3.090K is doing the same thing.
Check in light is on and the car is missing.
From what I understand and a good idea is to swap out the plugs and engine ignitioncoils? Possibly 02 sensor?
Where are theengine coils located and 02 sensor? Can you recomend a good shop manual?
Is there a place to getthese part at adiscount other then going to the dealership?
-coils
-02sensors
-plugs
-gasket
Thanks for your help, great forum and advise.
