Default 4.0 or 4.2 litre

Can anyone tell me if this S-type is a 4.0 litre or 4.2 litre by looking at the motor? I think it is a 4.2 litre version as the 4.0 litre version has a different inlet manifold setup.

Can someone verify this? The car is in a dealer yard but not a Jaguar certified one and the sales person does not know anything about the S-type.

Thanks.

2002 year.

The layout with the extra cowling looks like a 4.2litre.

I just need to get people expert advice.

I don't have a VIN reference available. A quick call to a Jaguar dealer with the VIN in hand will tell you what the car came with. Now, if the previous owner changed the motor.......

I am interested in the Vin Number and when the S type R was first made. My STR was first registered on the 06/02/2002 in the UK with a vin No. of 45241 and yet if i understand correctly the 4.2 engine was not fitted until after Vin No. 45255. my car is definitely fitted with a 4.2 engine and is a factory made STR, any info would be appreciated

How about a little clue as to what the issue is? Just curious.

oakebury - I don't know why yours is outside the official range. Pre-production, maybe. Or, the official PDF is wrong LOL. Either way, I bet it causes grief when trying to order some parts (such as brakes).

I got the data from: Vehicle Specifications, both
JJM 10 34 99 40 09/2003
and JJM 10 34 99 501 07/2004

If I'm correct with my facts, the 4.2L engine first came out in the 2003 model year along with the revamped dash and parking brake arrangement and the 6 speed gearbox. The trunk lid should also say V8 instead of 4.0

Does the car you're looking at have all the newer features?

Checking the VIN has to be worthwhile

Here is a picture of the interior. It has the newer electronic handbrake setup in the centre console. Its being sold as a 2002. This is where my confusion is.

The interior will NOT tell you the engine size!
