Default 4.2 v8 engine removal

Hello i am about to remove the engine from my s type
For a rebuild
due to a couple of valves causing damage to two pistons
had a bore scope down the cylinders on cylinders 7 & 8
pistons are damaged but the cylinder bores are fine
So my question is is it better to remove engine by its self or engine and transmission together
Taking out from bottom is not a option for me
has to go out the top
Replaceing with a second hand engine is not a option
as there are no 4.2 v8 engines in new Zealand for sale
i have priced one from the uk and the United states
Shipping alone was nzd $ 4000.00
So have to rebuild it
Thanks
Darrol

@Darrol2004, here is a link to the X202/206 Workshop Manual:

If you have sufficient clearance under the vehicle, it's best to remove the gearbox with the engine through the top of the engine compartment.

Depending on the number of kilometres on the vehicle, have a local automotive electrical specialist overhaul the starter motor and alternator whilst they're off the engine.
