Advice will be appreciated! : Engine malfunction light
Just bought my nice car yesterday, drove around for half an hour, parked, and when I started again 10 mins later, the ENGINE MALFUNCTION light came on!
What a shock!
--->How do I reset it, just to see if it comes on again? Can't afford to go to a dealer, just spent every last penny to buy the car.
But of course will have to get it repaired if I know it's a serious fault and not just a problem with a faulty sensor for example.
It still drives fine, have not put in gas yet, so it can't be the fuel cap that's not closed properly.
---> Or is there a good Samaritan in the Toronto area that has a test device to plug it in to see what it says re which code comes up? I understand one you have the error code, you can look up on the net what it stands for.
I know I can do the scan at Canadian Tire for example, but the $113 they ask just to see what the fault code is, is very stiff!
Another alternative is to invest in a scanning device, I read they can cost as little as $40? - but which one to get for my s model, 2004, and where to plug it in?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome from a fellow Canadian and Ontario resident. We have quite a few members in the GTA, I'm sure more than a few have OBDII scanners and could see what code(s) are registered. OTOH, code readers are available on eBay for next to nothing as you've mentioned. If you plan on doing your own work, buying one now would be a wise decision.
Since having a safety check and e-test are required in Ontario when a used vehicle changes hands, I'd be curious as to how your car made it through the e-test with this fault. Can you not go back to the seller and complain?

$113 That's outrageous.
For a quick fix, why not take SixRotors up on his kind offer to check the codes post them up and go from there.
If you have a minute while doing that don't forget the intro in the new members section.

Thank you SIX ROTORS. I am not sure how to contact you as I am new to this forum, and don't know if what I'm writing now, is just for your eyes or will it be posted on the net? But thank you so much for offering to test my car! I read some of the other responses to my post, and one guy asked "how did it past the test?". That made me think yes, I should go back to Canadian Tire and let them check out what the "engine malfunction light" means. BEFORE I handed the car in at their Auto workshop for the Safety test certificate, all was fine; the light went on AFTER they tested the car. So surely, and maybe, they will do it for free. If I don't get any help there, I will contact you again. Thanks so much, AJ.
