Default Aftermarket Fuel Pump Issues

Hi Everyone

Need some advice. Had my fuel pump replaced on my MY 03 S-type, 3.0 base model. The mechanic used an aftermarket brand. Since replacing the fuel pump twice so far, the gas gauge is totally off. Taking a long time to reach full, or not working at all and then working but inaccurately. It also seems that the pump is not holding pressure because it does not start up right away, like it used to. Takes a couple of tries to get it to start.

The mechanic told me he called a Jag tech who told him that only Jag pumps will work, and that aftermarket pumps do not! I am highly suspicious of this explanation.

The reason the fuel pump was replaced was due to a strong gasoline smell surrounding the car and getting in to my vents when the ac was on.

Any insight would be greatly be appreciated.

As I recall the gauge reading is via float sensors - I think there are 2 - so not to do with the pump.

But in any case the pump should work and I'm sure I've seen reports of other pumps, such as Bosch.

Do you know if the mechanic replaced the entire fuel pump module? That includes the sender for the fuel gauge, which would explain a lot. Or did he replace just the pump itself, which is only one component in the larger module?

Any idea what brand was installed? Any quality name-brand should be fine, such as Airtex, Carter, Delphi, Bosch, etc. Unfortunately, there are a lot of no-name aftermarket parts out there, too, or they have names you've never heard of like Fling Dung or Wok Hoam. I'd certainly stay away from those.
