Maybe X-type would be better for you, S is kind of big, it is for old farts like me.
Actually, a like-year XJ6 or 8 is associated with slow driving dentists or thereabouts. In The Atlanta area, I mostly see fellow S-Types used as family haulers, so I wonder why the flack? I can see if you got out of a XK....
I took a lot of heat when I picked up a few co-workers for lunch...and received the "You drive a Jag?" Remarks.....until I mentioned that it's 14 years old, and has 100,000 miles on it. It just looks newer than it is. Besides, most are used to seeing me in a F-150.....a 1998.
I think you'd get such a reception if you were previously in a beater and have stepped up to a vehicle that folks believe is "out of your league".
BTW, when you graduate law school, get a F-Type R. Imagine the reaction!
Let the haters hate!

Reason: Spell Check

Corvette, Jaguar, Mercedes or GoldWing, I usually pay 3 digit price.
I also get comments. Even some that say "it's just a glorified ford" Many say my 2003 STR looks like a brand new car, despite its age and 120k miles. I personally got it because of its power and rarity. I like having something no one else does. I'm the only one at my work with a Jaguar. I'm the only one at my gym with an STR, and so on. On top of that, the Jag fits better as I am schooling for a degree in the medical field. Just gives a better impression than the Mustang I drove before it. Mustang just felt too "kids car" I am 36.

I think it is strictly the age thing going on with you and younger folks in general seem to get and give more sh*t to each other and I suppose a few older guys don't outgrow it. Only comments I have ever received about the XK8 are positive and complementary (well, one guy asked if it was a "Forduar" but he was just being friendly about it). Neighbor kid who has always been polite to me and is a bike and car guy, was talking to my nephew after he rode up on his sportbike and said "what the "eff" are you doing riding a "effing" Honda "b*tch", so like I said an age thing.........
I've had my S-Type 4.0 for a good few months and I've noticed that people all of a sudden hate me out on the roads. Most mechanics and auto parts stores I have been to also immediately change their attitude when they see the car. For instance, I had a low-beam out and I went to NAPA to get a bulb. The mechanic looked at the car and said, "What, a f***ing Jag? Perhaps it's because I'm 19 years old and look about 17 to most people, or maybe its just my luck but I have never seen so many (usually older) men roll their eyes at me in my life.
Im curious to see if this is normal when you drive a car like this. (I came from driving a 93 Nissan Altima so this is all new to me.)
Same thing happen to me, I'm 45 and the elder look to me like I'm a celebrity
Most people do not know that you can get a Jag nowadays under 15 grants
I get the the same crap. I'm 65, retired and working part-time as a Paramedic, with co-workers 1/3 my age. Of course having 2 older Corvettes doesn't help. When I'm driving one of the vettes, I notice most people go out of their way to avoid being seen looking at the car. In my S Type, they look. Especially the BMW, Volvo and Mercedes owners.

How very odd. I wonder if this is a regional or "city" thing. I live in a semi-rural community with wide range of incomes, and I only have had positive reactions and comments whenever I drive an "interesting" car. Of course I have limited experience in Ferraris, Porsches, and none in Lambos. Sounds like more folks need to "grow up" than I realized.

You are pretty close, I spent about $1500, including parts and registration.
I am pretty sure you can buy 2000 S-type for $2k in good running condition.
You should have heard the comments we got when I had all my Jaguars parked next to each other when I moved into my new place last year.
2 of them aren't running, but my new neighbors didn't know that.
I got the cars garaged as soon as possible. It has been quite since then...
Ive always been a fan of Luxury sedans. I found the X-Type to be too much like a box on wheels and the XK8 looks like an Aston Martin gone wrong. Just my opinion though.

Part of brand ownership, has always been one that has been attached to emotive responses to that ownership. Simply answer, "there is nothing on the planet that drives like that car, and I never cease to smile after driving it..." What more can you ask?
