Default Anyone using Castrol Edge in there STR's?

Just wanted to know if anyone have used Castrol Edge engine oil in there STR's or do you recommend using it for a high milage STR? I'm debating on using either Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 high milage oil Synthetic 10w40 instead of 5w30.

Thanks.

Someone just posted the link to www.bobistheoilguy.com which looks to have more answers than you'll ever need or want! Short answer: don't do it. You don't want a thicker oil.

I believe thats the oil I just bought for my next oil change. I havent ran it yet so not sure how it is. I am running the recommended 5W-30 though so I'm really no help to this topic at all.

Since I'm living down here in Florida, we don't see very low temps in minus very rarely, but since spring is around the corner, putting in 10w40 instead of 5w30 won't make too much of a difference in start ups because of the hot climate here. I'm putting in a thicker weight because every since I was using Synthetic oil 5w30 by Mobil 1, I start noticing a leak in my REAR Main seal. I did a lot of reading up and found that Synthetic Oil for high mileage cars such as mine(90k) you will start noticing slight leaks which is whats happening to me. My other alternative would be using 10w40 mobil 1 high milage synthetic oil which has the additives in their for seal conditioners, (REad great stuff about the 10w40 high milage brand from Mobil 1 on bobstheoilguy.com forum and other online sites)

Vance how many miles are on your STR?

I actually meant the brand not the weight. I bought some Castrol Edge cause it was on sale but I'm using 5W-30 which is why I said I'm probably no help to this post. LOL. I wasnt sure if he was wondering about the weight or brand but I see it was more about the weight over the brand.

jag79- I just hit 76000 miles.

jag79 - I guess if 10W40 is in the handbook it'll be OK but using it due to a leaking seal looks like the wrong idea.

Hey Jagv8, the handbook states 5w30, but I went ahead and purchased 10w30 CAstrol Edge($63 for 8qts), instead of the Mobil 1 10w40 high milage full synthetic. For high milage car like my STR, going a little heavier isn't going to hurt it, plus it might even benefit me from reducing or even stopping the small leak I have in the rear main seal. I'll keep ya guys posted once I get it down tomorrow hopefully using Vance's youtube guide on oil change

WOW. That is alot. Any time you buy oil anyone that checks this post go to Wally World (Walmart). There oil is always the cheapest and they sell alot of brands in the 5 qt jugs. I got the Castrol Edge for 21 for 5 qts so 10 qts is only 42. Then I use one and half of one of them for my oil change then next time you only have to buy one cause you still have 2.5 qts in the other then next time buy 2 again. I was using Mobil 1 and its only 25 for the 5qt jug but the Castrol is cheaper but I wont go into a brand thing cause I just buy whatever. So next time check them out instead of buying individual qts which cost alot more.

Man I didn't see it at Walmart, I went to a SuperWalmart they didnt' even carry the CAstrol Edge, they only had Castrol Syntec, I was like WTF!!! I normally do buy from Walmart the 5qts, but hey I didnt open the bottles from ADvanceAutoparts, I still can return them, I might have to call some other Walmarts up and find out if they carry them, 10qts for 42 is a lot better thats for sure!

Update: alright I found one Superwalmart that does carry it but for the 5qt its $27.50 x2=$55 not including tax, so basically for 8qts I paid like approx 3 or 4 dollars more from AdvancedAutoparts , Vance buddy I think you got it on sale the 5qts from Walmart,

Just about any quality synthetic oil will have the proper seal conditioners. Mobil 1 is excellent stuff, in both forms, and I don't think the high mileage is much more than a little marketing twist. But if it works for ya, then that's great.

It probably was I do remember there being like a different tag showing the price which is why I picked it up cause I remember it was cheaper then the Mobil 1. Thats still nice to get 10 qts for cheaper then 8. So now next time you will only have to pay 27.50. I just buy whatever synthetic is under 25 bucks whenever I'm getting close to an oil change.

Going back to that website (bob is etc), going to 10w from 5w doesn't look a good idea at all.

reviving an older thread, 'cuz I'm going to be changing my oil for the first time since I got the car. ('03 STR with 120k miles)
apparently my search terms I'm using are too frequently used, because I'm not finding all the heated debates I'd expect to find on who uses what. (phwew!)

Anyway: I'm thinking I'll be using full synthetics. Partly because I don't know what's been used before, and it's safer to go to full-synthetic than to run the risk that it was already on them, and I went back to conventional oils.

But my user guide seems to contradict what I've seen on this thread about viscosity. some inthis thread are talking about 10w30 and 10w40. My handbook says progressively: 0w30, 5w30, 0w40 and 5w40, depending on the ambient temperature range the car is operated in.

so, headed into winter here, where we will see many morning well under freezing, I'm thinking I'll go to the 5w30. Any thoughts? cautions?

favorite filter, while we're at it?

Here's the grade CASTROL recommend for the STR:

And that's as far as I'm going in a 'best oil' debate.

There's no risk in going back to non-synthetics and very little advantage to continuing the use of synthetics unless an extended change interval is taken advantage of.

There's also no benefit in second guessing factory recommendations for viscosity- use whatever range suits your mystery location and most importantly makes you happy.

I know where you are! but your secret is safe.

Last time I was there a tiny chip in my windscreen turned into a foot long crack overnight as it was so bleedin' cold, the car parked next to me was frozen solid.

c'mon you guys.... yer all giving me a hard time about my "mystery location".... I DID say how cold it is here....
I've just been teaching my kids online safety for so many years... I guess I'm practicing what I preach!

I'm really not paranoid.... (well... maybe I am... but I don't want anyone to find-out if I am...)

and yes, I've commented about where I'm at on several occasions.... I just don't see the need to put it in my profile for anyone who wants to go looking....
And besides, every time it comes up, I have to field questions about how many wives Mitt Romney REALLY has....
