Default Auto Transmission on my S-Type

I glance through this forum most days, and I've found it to be a great source of information when you're trying to get your head around a fresh drive experience - especially when the car is still under dealer warranty, and you want to try to make sure all is well before the warranty expires.
Following the link and reading the info at jaguarclimatecontrol.com gave me the confidence to say to the dealer "it aint working right" so last week the A/C compressor was replaced and now all seems well with the Climate Control system.
However, after driving only manual cars for 50+ years, I have a query regarding the auto transmission on the S-type :-
What governs the point at which a gear-change occurs....is it purely revs/torque etc or something more complex, and is there a quick check to verify this ?
My reason for asking is that the engine revs seem to get too high before a gear-change occurs.

The engine speed at which the transmission shifts is primarily affected by throttle position. The harder you press the higher the engine will rev.

It's an adaptive box with its own computer (TCM) and also has Sport so it's not simple.

Example: someone drives the car hard, revving a lot. It will learn to change at higher revs than someone who accelerates & cruises lazily.

So, what sorts of revs and when? With S selected or not. Etc.

BTW, there's another 2.5 owner - telferstr - who may help. He's on the UK forum if not here.

@ the OP:you haven't got the S button pressed have you? Button marked "S" at the LHS base of the gear lever.

If you have this will shift the change points higher up the rev range.

Thanks for the helpful information..I think 'Mikey' may have hit it on the head with the throttle position answer......50+ years driving only manual wagons, now my first auto takes a bit of getting used to...but I love it already !
