Default Can't shift out of park

Hi there,

First post here, so I hope I follow the etiquette ok...

I have a 2004 S type 3.0 Auto

Up till recently it's always moved from park to r/n/d no problems, but just lately, it is reluctant to move out of park - not every time, but more often than not now.

Taking my foot off the brake and re-applying it sometimes works, but sometimes it doesn't and I have to do it 2 or 3 times.

The P is flashing, and sometimes when I put my foot on brake it goes constant, and sometimes I have to do it several times.

Is this something to do with the gearbox, the brake pedal or some form of link between the two?

Thank you.

I would check the battery first. That seems similar to what I ran into about a year and a half or so. Pep Boys has a pretty good replacement for about $150 or so. If the battery checks out OK then you should check the linkage. There has been a fair number of incidents where a bolt fell out of the linkage. Try doing some searches on shifter linkages to see if you come up with something.

Definitely check and tighten linkage bracket bolts on trans. On my 2003 I was once stranded in a parking lot with shift malfunction and this forum immediately led me to look under the car where I found one of the two bolts lying on the ground.

Could be a dodgy microswitch. You can meter it out while referring to the elec. guide, part of free download JTIS.

The solenoid doesn't properly get power from the brake switch sometimes... If you pull the console cover you can test it.
