Default Car still amazes me

This might sound like a stupid thing...I am still amazed at how my car monitors itself...last night I am at the store and upon startup I get a yellow light with a message saying right rear brake light out ...I go home and have my daughter look and it was out...I did not know this car had this capability....very impressed because it is an 06 and at that time light specifics must have been cutting edge...or not....either way I am curious how the module can pinpoint a specific bulb failure and I learned another new feature of my car

Hi Scott,
It's a simple voltage check on the return side of the lamp holder wiring - no voltage on the return when lights switched on and the controller simply assumes the bulb is dead and trips the warning light.

Cheers,
Cubist

Thanks....very nice feature....when all the electronics work good on these cars, they are pretty impressive for their day I think.... fortunately mine work great thanks to my new sdd setup...reflashed some modules and the network itself

The old jaguar XJ40's had the lamp fail feature way back in 86!
So by 2006 it was already 20 years since jaguar started equiping their cars with this feature!

My ‘84 Ford pickup has a variation on this feature. No message on the dash to indicate a failed tail lamp, though. The system is based on a police officer pulling me over to inform me, but it works just as reliably.

Chevrolet Corvettes from 1968 onwards had this feature, so it's nothing new
