I am not sure but don't think a shop would risk that. But who knows? Years ago selling of bypass test pipes was pretty common. They were only for temporary use but I don't see those any more and think that's all over nowadays.

JagV8, the down stream 02's are only there to see if the exhaust is cleaned by the converters. The fuel trim/afr's are controlled by upstream 02's
I would consider replacing stock if I think theyre about $200 and change each on partsgeek.com for Oem
or you can buy metal matrix hiflo. theyre not a ceramic brick, but metal and therefore wont break apart. www.summitracing.com or maybe JEGS Performance Auto Parts - Holley - Billet Specialties - Edelbrock - MSD - Moroso - Mr Gasket
plus theyre smaller size and easier fit. but youll ahve to have them welded in.

Something else to consider. If you remove the converters you may not be able to pass your state's vehicle inspection. CA is especially bad for this. If the inspectors see any alteration of the emission system, they'll flunk your car on the spot. It doesn't matter if your car will actually pass the tailpipe test. I would recommend checking your state's DMV regulations.

Since reviving this thread, I'm 0-5 with replies Perhaps a new thread titled: "Catalytic Converter Delete 2.0 and a hot chick in a thong" will yield better results

I think there's two presumptions made in this post

1) the cats get clogged on S-types
2) they rob huge amounts of power even if not clogged.

There's no real trend that I know of for point 1), and believe number 2) to be false. Much like the intake tract, Jaguar didn't leave much on the table for the aftermarket to play with.

I haven't seen or heard of a muffler shop that will make a cat bypass tube since the 80s.

not to try to hijack your thread, but i have a quick question.......

my moms jag is getting a cat code and needs to pass inspection soon. i have the obd2 plug for my iphone that tells me codes, can clear them, and get a lot of other info, like o2 stuff. im wondering....

1. if theres a way i can tell which cat it is?
2. if theres any way to fix this without getting a new cat? bypass or clean it or something?
3. if not, what cat should i buy, and from where? any good prices? can it be installed at home?
4. how hard are they to install? do they weld or bolt in?

thanks in advance!

Read the actual codes and by all means post the numbers. Be sure also to post the details of the car!

I do believe it is illegal in all 50 states to remove any emission controls on a car.
However, approved after market parts are allowable, except mostly in Calif.

Now we're 0-10 I would NEVER drive a car without a cat on the road...Even if I got Megan Fox pregnant and had to bring her to the hospital 9 months later, I'd tell her "no, driving without a cat is illegal"...Obviously, I'd only drive the cat-less car around my property, drift around my house...poadsfkla;jfsd;lj Sorry guys, it was the strangest thing, my pant justs caught on fire...

Coming from and being involved in the F-Body (4th gen camaro's and trans ams)world for 10 years, it was quite common to remove the cats as part of a combo package when doing header swaps - I did this as well. There were plenty of shops that made off road pipes for cheap. Relative to the power, removing the cats was good for 10rwhp on a 350bhp motor. That's huge bang for buck. The computer can be tuned for 100-150$ and simply delete the O2/Cat code making it a breeze to pass emissions.

Relevant or not I think our best bet is buying high flow magnaflow cats from Amazon.com and enjoying the mild sound increase, respectable power boost, and not having to tweak the computer or swap for emissions.

Still not sure this has actually been done nor if anyone will admit to doing it...

What's clear is if you do this, you need either 02 simulators or try brutals suggestion with the anti-fouler...There's a risk the car may not run good...

My driver side cat clogged and I got magnaflows...

I did hear one shop tell me "the way around it is if your car comes into the shop with a cat it has to leave with one...But if you want to drive your car next door and borrow my pipe cutter..." I passed due to not wanting to deal with the potential computer/02 issues and the fact that the guy wanted $500 to make cat deletes...

Don't know about the rules in your kneck of the wood, but if you removed them over this side of the Pacific & got caught you'd be deep in the proverbial with a very short breathing straw! They should only play up if you've been running leaded fuel instead of unleaded, or due to other problems with the vehicle such as overheating, particularly if the engine has been running too lean for a while. High sulphur fuels can also cause problems with fouling of the coatings.

And a 'check engine' light warning can be caused by a malfunctioning cat.

Cheers,

Languid.
p.s. just looked up your rules - it is illegal to remove the catalytic converter in the USA except for the purpose of immediate replacement. I didn't look up the penalties, but I should imagine that they would reflect 'naughty, naughty' just like they do here.

There you go, you got the flow, stayed legal, and it was cheaper to boot.

Time to resurrect this thread again...

There is no smog test in Mexico, so I have no real worries about legality.
Secondly there are so many vehicles here without any kind of maintance so one car without a cat will not be a big deal IMHO.

So anyone taken off their cats on an 2001 XK8? Did you gain power, better mpg, exhaust sound?

Did you suffer from the engine sensors retaliating and restricting performance or making the car inoperable?

Anyone have current good advice on this subject?

All comments gratefully received!

JEZ

PS. Brutal are those comments of your still valid? Great tech help would be appreciated!
