Default CEL Duration

Hello All,

If your CEL comes on from loose gas cap, will it go off when corrected, or does it have to be reset.

I searched, and didnt find anything

If the cause is indeed a loose gas cap, the CEL will typically go out on its own after a driving cycle or two once the issue is corrected....

The site Search ignores short words

It'll go off. Should be after 2 or 3 cold-to-hot engine cycles. The code will remain stored internally for more cycles unless you clear it.

Just went thru this on my 2005 STR. You can find the post if you search.

No the CEL will stay on until turned off. I had an emissions test done which includes a gas cap check off the vehicle. After getting a pass on the test the next day my car had a CEL. Got it checked and it was a large vacuum leak code which points directly to a bad gas cap. The next day after that I had the code read again and this time had all codes cleared.

No light or problem since that time.

As I recall, USA law mandates that the MIL be automatically extinguished (once the fault is not there) within specified times/conditions. I expect Jaguar conform to that law since there are seriously large penalties for failing to do so - some of which they incurred in the past.

It would be quicker to clear the code, though
