Yes get the engine running properly before looking at any transmission codes. Very common for engine problems to cause the transmission to try and adapt to the situation. Then it can't and sets a transmission error but there's really nothing wrong with the transmission.
Be double sure the fluid level is correct as this has a large effect on everything!
