Default Confused about subs

I wouldnt mind adding a little to the bass in the car. I see threads on using stock amps, replacing factory subs, and ripping it all out. How hard is installing a aftermarket amp and subs? What have you guys done? I'm posting in this section just because there is more traffic here. Thanks.

I wouldnt do it myself. I wouldnt use a stock amp either, You notice how ever thing else on the cars are stock and the take a crap whenever it feels like it.

Get a nice JL Audio 500/1 ampor 1000/1 how ever loud you want to go and find a sub to go with it. Ascendant Audio has always been a favorite of mine. JL audio w7s are the *****.

Reason why I wouldnt do it myself because when you mess it up it aint your problem
I heard some wierd stuff happens when you disconnect the battery

Adding a sub and aftermarket amp is easy.....

I'm assuming since your car is an STR you have the alpine setup. All the connections you need are in the trunk.

You need to tap into the two pairs sub wires coming out of the alpine amp, and connect them to a line output converter. There is no traditional "remote turn on" SO instead you need to tap an ignition sourced power source. Hint: there's a cable for an aux power port accessory in the trunk.

Then you need to connect the RCA jacks on the LOC to the RCA inputs on the amp.

That covers your remote turn on and signal wires.

Now, you need to connect proper gauge power and ground wires for the amplifier - Make sure you use a fuse as close as you can get it to the battery.

Then you need to run speaker wires from the output of your amp to the new sub (which will probably be a box in the trunk).

Then its onto setting gains to match the bass level to the system.

If this sounds like something you can handle, let me know and I'll hook you up with wiring diagrams pics etc....

Take care,

George

I used to be a lead electrician on the ch-47 F & G models...................i have heard that saying numerous times in the past. While it isnt hard to do at all, it does take some different skills than normal. If you get stuck on something PM george or myself and we can walk you through it.

The jl's are nice but I'd go for an amp with high level inputs and a self sensing turn on. It just cleans up your setup quite a bit and it's less wires to deal with. I went fairly low budget and am running a kenwood 9105 sub amp. No complaints...

No need for that....

99 - here's the alpine wiring diagram. PM Me for details on what wires to tap etc....

Take care,

George

Hey Snake if you need a hand let me know. I have installed some systems in the past and with Georges hint about the remote wire it should be very easy to do. I can give you a hand. Just let me know when you would want to tackle it and I can come to you.

Here's a video of a funky brit installing the socket in his S-Type...

‪Jaguar S Type Aux power install in boot‬‏ - YouTube

You don't need the socket - just take a multimeter and test for the positive side. Also make sure it's actually ignition switched, although im 99.5% certain it is.

Take care,

George

I disconnected the rear subs and tapped the wires into an LOC. Then hook RCA cables to the LOC and a 600w alpine amp. I grounded the amp to a screw in the trunk under the carpet and with the battery right there it was very easy. I have two 12" alpine Type-S speakers (amp and speakers were from when I had my 300m). By tapping into the existing sub wires, I can control the sub output from the existing radio, which is very nice.
