Default Crumbling insulation material under the wiper cowl?

Re: 2007 S-Type.

I was changing the cabin air filter today and saw a bunch of disintegrated insulation material crumbling and dropping near the back of the engine bay cover.

The insulation material was originally attached to the bottom side of the plastic cowl. They crumble at touch, and fell apart like giant dust bunnies - so I just cleaned out the rest so this crap wouldn't fly all over the engine bay.

Whatever purpose it was serving, probably wasn't serving it very well. Should I bother to get replacement insulation for it? Would I have to replace the entire plastic cowl to get the replacement?

BTW lost a stupid push pin thing. Can anyone recommend an aftermarket solution? The OEM part seems flimsy.

Thanks gentlemen.

Moo don't worry about the insulation, a shop vac will suck up alot of the stuff that floats around under the hood (bonnet). Most of us that have DIYed will agree, that you don't need to replace it.

The push/pull pin is more than likely trapped in the under pan (if you still have one). Unless you want to screw the cowl down there is not much else you can substitute.

I noticed the same thing on my 2005 STR. I just cleaned it up and did not replace it. You might check your hood pad while your under the hood. Mine shrunk and broke away from the push pin fasteners. The dealer replaced it under warranty but it's WAY over priced.

If you do need a new one search for hood liner and you will find a guy selling aftermarket ones that are so much better and cheaper. Plus he can add custom lettering too.
If you don't find your push pin they are also used on the Lincoln LS. The LS guys have also replaced them with Hillman #H-881207 1/4" Push In Nylon Rivet. These are at most Lowes.

Thanks, I was able to find the Hillman 881207 rivets @ Lowes (2 pieces for $1). Fits perfectly. Probably will be a little harder to remove than OEM rivets.

Re: hood pad. Yes I can see it's starting to shrink horizontally, and pulling/ripping on the outer left & right fasteners. I put some 2"-wide Gorilla tape at a few key perimeter points, hopefully that'll deter further shrinkage. The max temperature specification is 150F so I will keep an eye on the tape condition after a summer day drive.

Cheers!

Sorry Moo, the gorilla tape is not going to hold. For replacement heres the link: Aircraft firewall material hood liner pad for Mustang, Corvette, Grand National, many other cars
