Well, it depends on a lot of factors. I've replaced / added components beyond the factory.
My car has nothing stock in it, it's at what I call phase 1 right now, but it's going to phase 2 as soon as the weather warms up and I get over this cold I've been fighting.

Two major factors affect cost / viablility.

First, does your car have navigation from the factory or not?

Second do you have the alpine amplified system or not?

Take care,

George

Well, you are in the best possible position to upgrade your factory stereo in that case.

As far as cost it can vary greatly.

The fixed costs are not that bad. A dash fitting kit (30 USD approx), a wiring harness adapter (20 USD approx), or one that allows you to use your steering wheel controls as well (approx 50 usd).

Then the cost of whatever radio / dvd / sat nav unit you select. (This can vary greatly depending on the cost of the unit you select, whether you buy it new or used etc).

This would replace the source unit and connect it to the factory speakers.

Beyond that other upgrades are additional (replacement speakers, aftermarket amplifiers etc). But those are the basics.

I can walk you or anyone through every step of the way.

Take care,

George

What do you think is the best unit for the S Type, without breaking the buget, speakers & amp can wait.

Sorry I never realized you replied.

Honestly It's personal preference, as long as you get a name brand unit anything will do, there is no "best".

Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion, Eclipse etc. I wouldn't get one off the off-brand ebay units.

I have a 3 year old Pioneer Avic D3 in my car, which still works great, even though the newer models can do more, have a larger screen, fancier satnav maps / graphics etc.

Take care,

George
