Doing it again!!
sold my wife's s-type three years ago and she has been moaning about it ever since, sooooooooooooo, here I go again.
Looking at a 2004 with 120K miles 6 cylinder base model.
Can anyone tell me if this model year has the problem tranny, or is it new enough to have the upgraded tranny.
Don't want to have to replace one of those babies!
Thanks!

2003 MY onward has better everything. I doubt anyone else will suggest otherwise.
Even the newer "sealed for life" transmission needs servicing though.
I've moved the thread to the S Type section for a better response.

Hi Larry, and greetings from down under,
If you mean the ZF manufactured 6HP26 auto 6spd, then the 2004 will do it for you. I am always careful with model years of Jaguars sold into export markets (both yours and mine) because there can be some disparity between manufacture and delivery dates. On my late 2007 car, the original OEM Varta battery manufacture date, as stamped into top of battery post, was June 06!
Certainly, a well performing ZF 6spd is a joy, but I endorse comments that it must be properly maintained re pan/filter/fluid changes. There are plenty of threads on this forum about all these topics.
There is also plenty of debate here about the looks of interiors and exteriors of both pre and post facelift models, but few would deny the vast improvements as the S-Type evolved from 1999 thru 2008 - or should that be 2007? - because from Feb '07, the former S-Type line at Castle Bromwich was churning out the new XF. The dates stamped into my car and VIN# suggest that the vast majority of 2008 cars were manufactured and stockpiled in late '07.
Also, very impressed that your wife has brought you kicking and screaming, from the Dark Side. Surely, life without Jaguar is little more than bare survival? (Hahaha)
Cheers,

Ken
