Be too easy if all the same. I am at a loss as to why there is what appears to be an air an inlet in it, but I'm convinced this is the entry route for all the small stones and bits of grit that accumulate inside it. Plus no idea what the slot cut out of the egg shaped dome is, nor why there is a 8mm hole bang in the centre. There must be some reasoning to the shape and design of the thing.

I believe yours was a cleaner version of ours staatsof:

yeah yeah I know, this is what it looked like 2 days after ownership, imagine my surprise when I dropped it to have a looksie at the 189 point inspection from the dealer who sold it to us with leaking oil pan, valve cover and IMT O-rings!

BTW it does not look this way any longer !

That's more like it. Looks very similar.

Notice there is no hole cutout in the dome shape near the air inlet/vent.
Jury still out out on reason for the two padded plastic bags.

The two padded platic bags are insulators. Ford uses em for sound deadening and as an insulator and protectant from water. My ex 02 x-Type 3.0 had em under the intake manifold as a means to deaden engine noise.

So why is the larger one around 1/3 rd of the thickness of the smaller one? If noise reducing why not over the whole area of the pan?

I bet the plastic pouches are to weigh down the belly pan as a means to prevent wobbling/wavering while under speed?

On mine there were very thin walled and empty.

It is an interesting piece especially when you think about how theyselected the varing heights. Some kind of simulation software for airflow and or noise?

So I'm guessing it's for noise reduction and air flow but that's a total SWAG.

Bob, did you write that the two plastic bags attached to your belly pan were empty? Interesting...(written with tobacco pipe in one hand and chin held in other) Bob, you may want to sit down before you hear what I write... Someone snatched two kilos from ya?

I have another approach to this - the belly pan is not there to keep things from coming up - it is an elaborate socket / screw catcher to keep these things from damaging your delicate garage floor making recovery of said sockets and screws a drawn out effort.

I think it's there (the undertray) as a receptacle for extra sand bags they had laying around. After stuffing them in every crack and crevice in the X type, then realizing the X was not meeting sales figures they had all of this extra sand.....

Does not cover the trans. It ends right where the pan starts but it might help just to get it out of the way when doing. I cant remember if any of the pan bolts are covered by it as I usually take it off anytime I do anything under the vehicle.
