Default Exhaust Cutout / Straight pipe

Hi guys, want to ask if any of you know about exhaust cutout / straight pipe?

Was thinking adding this to my S Type after i finish the restoration (not sure), watched lot of videos about the instalation of electronic cutout and pneumatic cutout and some of them say that the electronic usually with time will start to rattle and not, will leake sound and not seal 100% in the other hand the pneumatic dosn't fail and always close 100%. i'm not planning on leaving it open all the time, is just for some occasion .

This is a video of an electric one

After some time watching videos i came across with a video of a Colombian guy that says that the cutout CAN'T be install in a Naturally Aspirated car, but he is the only one that i have found that says that, search on google also and no information.

Video of the guy explaning why with naturally aspirated engine will not work (in Spanish, from 4:00 min to 4:45 min).

For those that doesn't speak spanish this is the short version lol: "The exhaust system has to maintain a certain pressure so that the car does not lose torque. When placing a cutout on a car exhaust system that is aspirated, it generally loses power, will only make noise and will not have power."

1- Is this true?
2- have any of you done this?
3- Any idea on how this can be done without loosing power?

Thanks for any info!!!

BEFORE you install any of that and spend money. Remove both back mufflers (Or Boxes if your UK!). They unbolt pretty easy. Now drive around a bit and see what you think of the sound. On my old 2005 STR (Yes a different engine than your car) I found it very loud and Mustang like. Not a problem but I thought the upgraded rear boxes I installed sounded better and more Jag like.

Some cars need back pressure but other than losing some power it's not a problem. But it does show that hacking off the intakes and exhaust to make more noise does not lead to more power. You still have cats so it's not a wide open exhaust. These are well designed cars so look for things others have done with success. That's why for mods especially I use vendors mentioned on this list. That way I don't need to re-invent the wheel using some unknown products.

Finally I think you going to find that 6 cylinders (and 4 cylinders) just don't have very good sounding exhaust. A 90 degree V-8 from any manufacturer yes those sound GREAT! Ford, Jaguar, GM,MB,BMW,Audi and on and on.

I will do that to hear how it sound

the upgraded rear box that you installed don't know how it sounds or if it makes loud sound, but i assume that it makes sound all the time. i thought that this set up will be good because i can shut the sound off and drive normally something that i like. Do you have any video of a comparison between the non upgraded and the upgraded rear box? As you know i live in the Dominican Republic north coast (in the Caribean ) and i know i will not find someone with the car that i can test the different sound lol. recently i have seen more or less 4 o 5 S Type, in the entire country. i know threre are more.

The thing is that i don't know how much power it will loose, probably i will Remove both back mufflers as you mention and take it to a dyno to see how much it loose.

Not looking for more power, is just that some times i like to hear some sound. i posted this to see if others have made this or other ideas of how to get the sound without loosing power. you mention that you upgraded the rear boxes and that's one different rout that i didn't though about, but as i mention before i want to compare a non modify with a modify as i don't want to be driving with loud noise all the time (i know, i'm contradicting my self, want loud noise but don't want it lol)

Where's the list of vendors?

i know mine is a 3.0 v6, not comprable to the v8 lol. i still don't understand why my dad went with the V6 and not the V8. I remember him searching and watching both of them. Saddly i will never know.

Thanks!!

Yes I replaced just the two rear mufflers. I got them used on EBay for about 1/2 price of new and they were Stainless too. Still a lot of money for not much of anything except it did sound good.
That was years ago and with the age of the S-Type all the after market stuff is long gone but because exhausts are easy to modify and repair that's not a problem unless your looking for something that will bolt on in place of the stock ones with no cutting or welding.

I wanted to just replace them without any mods to the stock exhaust system.
