Default Front cup holders

Just purchased an 05' S-Type and noticed the front cup holders are rather small. I saw a cup holder with a larger opening on for a newer model and am wondering if it will fit my year. And where to get aside from the dealer.

There are two styles on the S Type... The "old" style where the openings are the same size and have spring loaded "fingers". The "new" style has a large opening and small opening with no "fingers". It was my understanding that the "new" style started in 05 (that's what mine came with). They are just inserts that snap in and out of the console and they are cheap from the dealer.

I switched mine to the older style with the "fingers". Still tough when the wife or Arianna is in the front seat and we both have a beverage for the ride...but better that the large and small..

Holy crap... The dealer actually tossed me the old style... It's listed on their parts site for $78.00! Nice gift, huh?

Thanks for all the advice! I guess I'll keep the smaller one for now. I'll just have to get my wife to get the "short" size instead of the "grande"!

If I'm driving and my wife is aboard as well, the rule is that she has to hold my 42-ounce beverage for me. As a benefit, she gets to use the large cupholder for her own beverage....

I've realised I need smaller thermos coffee mugs. My 2003 S-Type came with the smaller holders and my favourite thermos is too large.

The large/small cup holder combo is the absolutely worst design decision that Jaguar made simply because there is no rational reason for it. I would expect that the guy who made it is on the welfare line now. It's just plain dumb.

The first time I saw it was on a car dealer's picture. I thought it was some kind of weird optical illusion.

Anyone have a part number for these two inserts?

Mercedes decided SL500 owners don't need cup holders, but rather the center console was better suited to holding cassette tapes... I've been thinking about doing some custom center console work, and it seems like this would fit the bill.

Candidly ... the cassette holders will probably work as well for coffee cup holders as the Jaguar solution does. Neither will hold a cup of coffee well.

My dealer's parts site doesn't show part numbers. Only the pars catalog illustrations. I would send an e-mail to Nalley Jaguar. They give wholesale prices to Jaguar Forum members. Another route would be to look on car-part.com for a used one. That should be much cheaper.

Here is an x type unit on e-bay for only $15.00.

Depending on how fancy you wanted to get.. Do a search on XJS cup holder on e-bay. There is a guy that does custom wood work and makes an insert that repaces the ashtray on the XJS with two aluminum cup holders. It is a pretty trick piece. He may be willing to do something with the SL's console.
