While driving my 2003 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 on a smooth paved road uphill in 3rd gear at about 50% throttle, I heard a loud metallic snap followed by clink on the front left (driver) side. I pulled over, backtracked on foot and found this. At first I thought maybe it was some random truck bolt I ran over because it doesn't have the typical "10.9" or any other numbering stamped on the head. The head is 15mm hex and length is ~220 mm from head to break in thread. I continued driving home and didn't notice anything wrong or different. I figured a bolt this large would have to be from the subframe if it were in fact from my car so when I got home I searched for "Jaguar S-Type subframe bolts." The pictures I found showed similar sized bolts to mine but not quite the same.. until I found a YouTube video by Autodidact (5:18) where he's removing the S-type front subframe...and voila, looks exactly my bolt, although he says it's hex 18mm (??).
From the engine bay, the nut (with the rest of the bolt) is relatively easy to access under the air box. I haven't climbed under the car, yet but I'm hoping I'll be able to find and replace the broken bolt. Does anyone know where i can find the part number? There are some bolts available on fleabay but they look a little different. Thanks!
Front subframe is held by 4 bolts, two M14 toward front and two M12 toward rear. The front (good) bolts are definitely easy to access, but the rear bolts may be a pain to get to. Ugh. #3 in this diagram https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/
I would remove the bolts carefully. One at a time, and replace with new / replacement bolts etc.
We don't want to break anymore, or upset the sub frame alignment.
Grease and protect the replacement bolts. But I expect you knew that.
Local dealer wanted $36 per bolt (insane but hardly surprising), so I ordered the two OEM M12 x 245 mm bolts and two retaining nuts for ~$50 shipped with tax from jaguar.oempartsonline. Parts are installed and car is back together! I did not touch the two front M14 bolts, they should be much stronger. New part number for the M12 bolt is C2P7447. Retaining nut part number XR857197.
