Default Fuel cap warning message

Hi everyone
i have a 2005 s type in perfect condition with 53,000 miles


i got an amber light with the warning message "check fuel filler cap"


i purchased a new fuel filler cap from the dealer, oem product


the light went off. But, the next time i used the car, the same warning came on after about 15 miles of driving.


I shut the car off. When i started it again i did not get another warning until i drove about 10 to 15 miles again.


And that's the way it has been for a couple of days!


Shut the car off, no warning when i start it, but, after about 10 to 15 miles it comes on again


anybody have any ideas?

Use an OBDII reader and get the actual codes.

I bet a dollar on P0440-450 range.

Default fuel cap issue

I have a 2006 s type 3.0 which had the same problems, I put it in the shop and found out the O rings around the fuel tank and under the hood fuel lines that go into the motor were cracked which fuel was leaking and air was getting into the lines. had them replaced and all is well....... hope this helps.. it also causes your cruse control to stop working....

The 2005 model year S-Type had a fuel tank replacement recall due to potential fuel leaks at the fuel filler tube gaskets and seals. If your car did not receive the new tank, you may be suffering the consequences now. The recall number was R176D. My S-Type received a new fuel tank via this recall in February 2007 prior to us purchasing the car in December 2008....

Just to confirm other comments here. That happens because of cracks and leaks in rubber tubes or gaskets that are part of the fuel or evaporative recovery systems. The whole system is supposed to be sealed. When there is a crack or leak, air leaks in which looks to the computer as though you left the fuel filler cap off, therefore the code.

Keith is correct. The leak could be anywhere, not just the fuel cap. The S-types have a check valve ***'y near the brake master cylinder that's known to crack and be the cause of related fault codes.

The leak would have to be in a part that connects directly to the same tubing. So just any air leak would not cause that but would cause fuel trims to be out. A "brake leak" (for short) affects trims but I don't think it would look like a fuel cap / EVAP problem.

What do you mean by "fuel trims"? I have the same problem in my car and one mechanic has replaced some tubing at the evaporative recycling valve assembly under the fuel tank, but it failed to resolve the problem. I am now going to ask my regular mechanic to take up the search and I would like to have some pre-knowledge to point him in the right direction. The car also has a slight "surging" of revs at low RPM's and low throttle openings which I am wondering if it is related?
