fuel gauge

so when l fill up mine just over 1/2 with in 10 miles its going down below 1/2 then l drive from Nottingham to south Leicestershire some 50 miles and it hardly moves , is this the shape of the tank and the float ,,

There are effectively two sides to the tank , it's possably balancing the fuel left to right . And calculating what the needle should be reading in the first few minutes.
